Brachyalestes opisthotaenia is a mid-sized African tetra reaching nearly 5 in standard length, distributed across coastal river basins of Cameroon and Gabon as well as the Dja system draining into the middle Congo River basin. A member of a genus that was for decades submerged within the sprawling catch-all Brycinus before being revalidated by phylogenomic analysis, it occupies the freshwater riverine habitats of equatorial west-central Africa and, though little known in the aquarium hobby, is assessed as Least Concern owing to its reasonably broad range.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachyalestes opisthotaenia was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1903. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records it as a valid species within the family Alestidae, the African tetras. The parenthetical authority reflects the fact that Boulenger did not originally place the species in Brachyalestes; the genus to which it was originally assigned has since been superseded.

The genus Brachyalestes was long synonymised under Brycinus, a broad, heterogeneous assemblage of African characoids. A phylogenomic study revisiting the relationships of the genus Brycinus and allied taxa revalidated Brachyalestes as a distinct clade within Alestidae, confirmed B. opisthotaenia as a valid member of that clade, and placed it within a subclade that diversified within the central Congo basin region. The species is most closely related to B. taeniurus and B. kingsleyae on morphological grounds, and adults of B. opisthotaenia are distinguished in part by the absence of a humeral spot, a character variable across the broader group.

The specific epithet opisthotaenia derives from Greek roots meaning "behind" (opisth-) and "band" (taenia), referring to a band or stripe positioned toward the rear of the body — a reference to the species' colour pattern.

Morphology

B. opisthotaenia is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed alestid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 5 in, a size placing it among the larger members of the genus. Like other Brachyalestes, it has the typical characoid body plan: a well-developed lateral line, an adipose fin, and a symmetrical forked caudal fin.

The species lacks a humeral spot in adults, distinguishing it from some congeners. The colour pattern involves a longitudinal band or stripe element positioned posteriorly on the body, as its name suggests. Precise scalation and meristic details from the original description have not been widely restated in secondary literature, and the species remains data-sparse in morphological terms compared with more frequently collected African characoids.

Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described in published sources, but males of African alestids commonly develop more intense colouration and deeper body profiles during the breeding season.

Habitat

Brachyalestes opisthotaenia occurs in freshwater river systems across equatorial west-central Africa. Its documented distribution spans the coastal river basins of Cameroon and Gabon — rivers draining independently to the Atlantic — as well as the Dja River system, which feeds into the middle Congo River basin of the Republic of Congo. A phylogenomic study additionally records the species from the Democratic Republic of Congo within the broader Congo Basin.

FishBase categorises the species as a pelagic freshwater fish, suggesting it occupies open or mid-water reaches of rivers and streams rather than being restricted to heavily structured bottom habitats. Specific water-chemistry data for the collection sites are not available in current literature. The range of habitats covered — both Atlantic coastal drainages and the Congo Basin — suggests tolerance of the varied but generally warm and moderately soft waters typical of equatorial Central African rivers.

Feeding

Detailed dietary data for B. opisthotaenia in the wild have not been published in accessible literature. African alestids in the size range of this species are generally considered opportunistic predators or omnivores, targeting small fish, aquatic invertebrates, and insects at the water surface — a feeding mode consistent with the species' pelagic habitat categorisation.

In an aquarium setting, comparably sized Brachyalestes species are typically offered meaty foods including small whole or chopped fish, large live or frozen invertebrates such as river shrimp, and high-quality pellets or sticks. Mating

No published account of mating behaviour specific to B. opisthotaenia is available. Within Alestidae broadly, the prevailing reproductive mode is open egg-scattering with no pair bond and no parental care, typically occurring among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or in open water. Males of alestids in breeding condition commonly display heightened colouration and pursue females with active courtship chasing.

Given B. opisthotaenia's size and phylogenetic position within Brachyalestes — a group characterised by the standard alestid open-spawning pattern — it is reasonable to infer similar behaviour, though this has not been documented experimentally or observationally in the published literature.

Breeding

No captive breeding record for B. opisthotaenia appears in the accessible aquarium or scientific literature. By analogy with other Alestidae, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation or over substrate, with hatching and early larval development proceeding without parental involvement.

In captive conditions for similarly sized alestids, slightly elevated temperatures, good water quality, and live or frozen foods are used to bring fish into breeding condition. The eggs and newly hatched larvae of medium-to-large alestids are generally relatively large compared with small tetras, and fry can often accept freshly hatched brine shrimp as a first food. Specific husbandry parameters for this species remain undocumented.

In the aquarium

Brachyalestes opisthotaenia is not an established aquarium species and is rarely if ever encountered in the ornamental trade. Its maximum size of nearly 5 in SL indicates that, like other large African alestids, it would require a spacious aquarium — a tank of 59 in or more in length — to be housed properly, with strong filtration and good oxygenation to match its likely active, open-water lifestyle.

Hobbyists keeping large alestids generally report them as robust, fast-moving fish that can be aggressive toward smaller tankmates and are best paired with species of similar or larger size. Equatorial west-central African biotope setups, with warm soft-to-medium-hardness water and minimal décor leaving open swimming space, would represent the most appropriate environment. Given the absence of any published husbandry information specific to this species, the care notes above are inferred from the wider Brachyalestes and Alestidae literature.

Conservation

Brachyalestes opisthotaenia is reported as Least Concern (LC) based on its occurrence across multiple river systems in Cameroon, Gabon, and the Congo Basin. The combination of Atlantic coastal drainages and Congo tributaries within its range means the species is not confined to a single watershed, reducing its vulnerability to localised habitat degradation.

No specific threats to the species have been identified in the literature. Central African riverine fish face general pressures common to the region, including deforestation affecting riparian zones, artisanal and commercial fishing, and expanding agricultural runoff in some areas. The equatorial Congo Basin and adjacent coastal drainages still retain large areas of intact forest cover, which supports the relatively stable status of many freshwater fish in the region.
