Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus andresoi was described by Román-Valencia in 2003 in a paper covering three new species from the family Characidae. The type locality is the upper Patía River basin in Colombia, and type specimens are deposited at IUQ (447, 448–449), CAS (70099–101), and FMNH (56566–67). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the valid name as Bryconamericus andresoi Román-Valencia, 2003; because the species was described in Bryconamericus and remains there, no parenthetical authority is used. The ITIS taxonomic database likewise confirms the name as valid.
Bryconamericus is one of the most speciose genera in the subfamily Stevardiinae (family Characidae), containing dozens of small, slender tetras distributed across river systems throughout tropical and subtropical South America. The genus is notorious for being difficult to work with taxonomically: species often differ only in counts of scales, fin rays, or teeth, and in subtle anatomical characters that require cleared-and-stained preparation or close examination of type material. Bryconamericus andresoi is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters: soft, flexible lips that cover the external row of premaxillary teeth; a long and wide fontanel (the membrane-covered gap on the skull roof); and the insertion position of pterygiophores in front of the anal fin, resting on the haemal spine of the third caudal vertebra.
Morphology
Bryconamericus andresoi reaches approximately 3 in standard length (SL) based on FishBase records, making it a small to moderate representative of its genus. Like other Bryconamericus, the body is slender, fusiform, and moderately compressed laterally — a body plan well suited to life in flowing water. The adipose fin is present, as is typical for characids.
The species' most diagnostically useful external feature is the soft, flexible texture of the lips, which are developed to the point of covering the outer (premaxillary) tooth row — a character that separates it from most congeners in which the lips are firmer and teeth more exposed. Internally, the elongated fontanel and the specific position of pterygiophores at the anterior anal fin region are the primary osteological markers used in the original description to separate it from related upper Patía endemics. Coloration in preserved specimens is not extensively detailed in available sources; the live color pattern is undocumented in the hobby literature, reflecting the species' rarity in the ornamental trade.
Habitat
Bryconamericus andresoi is known from the upper Patía River basin in southwestern Colombia. The Patía is a major Pacific-draining river system that originates in the Cordillera Central and Cordillera Occidental of the Colombian Andes, flowing through a geologically active valley before reaching the Pacific coast. The upper reaches where this species occurs are montane or submontane, characterized by cooler water temperatures, higher oxygen levels, and faster currents than the lowland reaches of the same drainage.
Occurrence data are sparse — FishBase records only two confirmed collection points — which limits the ability to characterize the habitat in detail beyond what the drainage basin implies. Highland Andean streams in Colombia of this type typically run over rocky or gravelly substrates with clear water and variable current speeds, supporting a mix of rheophilic (current-loving) and edge-dwelling small fishes. The species is regarded as a Colombian endemic with no confirmed records outside the upper Patía system.
Feeding

Mating
No observational data on the mating behavior of Bryconamericus andresoi in the wild or in captivity are documented in available sources. Members of the genus Bryconamericus and the wider family Characidae are broadly egg-scattering open spawners with no parental care, and B. andresoi is expected to follow this pattern.
In related small Andean characids, males typically pursue females during spawning events, and fertilization is external. Eggs are scattered among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, leaf litter, or over substrate, where they receive no further attention from the parents. Seasonal cues such as water temperature changes or photoperiod shifts associated with Andean wet seasons likely trigger spawning in wild populations, though no specific data exist for this species.
Breeding
Bryconamericus andresoi has not been bred in captivity as documented in the aquarium literature, and no breeding protocols have been established for this species. As a characid, it almost certainly follows the egg-scattering mode typical of the family: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over substrate, with no parental care and a tendency for adults to consume eggs if left in the spawning container.
Breeders attempting to spawn related Bryconamericus or small Andean characids typically condition fish on live and frozen foods before introducing them to a spawning tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops. Eggs are removed promptly, and fry require infusoria or very fine commercial fry food as a first food before transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp. Water temperatures in the cooler range appropriate for Andean species (likely 64–75 °F) would be expected to give better results than typical tropical setups.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus andresoi is not known to be available in the ornamental fish trade, and no established aquarium husbandry guidelines exist for this species. It is a scientific specimen rather than a hobby fish, and any appearance in the hobby would likely come through specialist scientific collection channels rather than commercial export.
Based on its origin in cool, oxygen-rich Andean highland streams, the species would require well-oxygenated, moderately cool water — temperatures in the range of roughly 64–75 °F would be more appropriate than typical tropical levels. A current-providing filter or powerhead and a tank with ample open swimming space would better suit its rheophilic ecology than a warm, still planted setup. Like other small schooling characids, it would be expected to be peaceful, best kept in groups, and suitable as a tankmate for other small, similarly temperatured species. However, all of this is inference from genus-level and habitat knowledge; direct husbandry experience is essentially absent from the literature.
Conservation
Bryconamericus andresoi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The Least Concern designation reflects that the species does not meet the threshold criteria for a threatened category, but it should be noted that the occurrence dataset for this species is very limited — only two documented collection points — and detailed population trend data are lacking. Colombia's freshwater fish fauna is among the most diverse and least fully surveyed in the world, and many species with Least Concern assessments face unquantified pressures from habitat modification in highland river systems.
The upper Patía basin, like many Andean drainages in Colombia, is subject to ongoing pressures including agricultural runoff, deforestation in riparian corridors, water extraction, and the legacy of coca cultivation-related land use in parts of the Patía watershed. None of these threats have been specifically quantified for B. andresoi, but they are contextually relevant for an endemic species with such restricted known occurrence. It is listed in the ZooKeys 2017 checklist of Colombian freshwater fishes as a confirmed native species.
