Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus caldasi was formally described in 2014 by Cesar Román-Valencia, Raquel I. Ruiz-C., Donald C. Taphorn, and Carlos A. García-Alzate in the journal Animal Biodiversity and Conservation (volume 37, issue 2). The type locality is La Libertad Creek, within the middle Cauca River basin of Colombia, a system draining the western Cordillera of the Andes. The valid name is confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) and WoRMS with the authority as given above.
Bryconamericus is a large, diverse genus of small characids distributed widely across South America. It belongs to the family Characidae, the core family of the order Characiformes. Some ichthyological treatments in recent decades have placed many Bryconamericus species into the family Stevardiiidae, though current Catalog of Fishes usage recognises Characidae as the encompassing family here. The genus as a whole is in active taxonomic revision, and B. caldasi is one of several species described from Andean river drainages in Colombia in the early 21st century.
Morphology
Bryconamericus caldasi is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. It shares the general body plan of the genus: fusiform and moderately compressed, with a forked caudal fin, a single dorsal fin, and the small adipose fin characteristic of most characoids. FishBase records 10 dorsal soft rays and a vertebral count of 38–41.
As with most Bryconamericus species, the external appearance is relatively plain compared with many popular aquarium tetras: silvery flanks, a dark lateral stripe or shadow, and no elaborate fin extensions or coloration. The morphological distinctions from congeners that define B. caldasi as a species were established in the original description through meristic and morphometric comparisons with other middle Cauca basin Bryconamericus, and the species is not readily identified in the field without reference to that work.
Habitat
This species is known from La Libertad Creek in the middle Cauca River basin of Colombia, making it a narrowly endemic Andean stream fish. The habitat is described as a clear creek with a rapid current over rocky and sandy bottoms — a clean, well-oxygenated environment typical of Andean foothill drainages at moderate elevation.
FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, inhabiting the water column close to the substrate in flowing water. Water chemistry recorded for the site is slightly alkaline, with a pH range of 7.0–8.3, consistent with the carbonate-rich geology common in Andean drainages. The restricted known range — a single creek in the middle Cauca system — makes it especially susceptible to any degradation of that habitat, though formal surveys of its extent and population status remain limited.
Feeding
Diet records for B. caldasi from the original description and FishBase indicate that this species feeds on small aquatic invertebrates, including dipteran larvae (midges and relatives), mayfly larvae (Ephemeroptera), and caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera). This places it firmly in the invertivore niche typical of small Andean stream characids, which exploit the abundant benthic and drift invertebrate fauna of fast-flowing Andean creeks.
In a captive setting, small Bryconamericus are generally adaptable feeders that will accept a variety of fine-particle prepared foods and small live or frozen invertebrates. Offering a diet that reflects the natural invertebrate emphasis — frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and other small zooplankton — would best suit the species' feeding biology, though specific captive husbandry data for B. caldasi are not available in the literature.
Mating
No specific mating behaviour has been described in the literature for Bryconamericus caldasi. Based on the biology of the genus and of Andean stream characids generally, B. caldasi is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males likely pursue females during spawning events, with eggs scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or deposited into the substrate in flowing water.
Seasonal reproductive cues in Andean stream species are often tied to rainfall and temperature shifts associated with wet and dry seasons. Courtship displays, if present, are probably subtle and similar to those documented in other small characins — males may show intensified coloration or behaviour near ripe females. Specific observations of spawning in the wild or in captivity for this species have not been published.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Bryconamericus caldasi appear in the accessible literature. As an Andean stream characid, it would be expected to follow the general egg-scattering pattern of the family: spawning adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, with no parental care and adults that may consume eggs if not removed.
Other small Bryconamericus species kept by specialist aquarists have been bred using a typical open-spawning approach — conditioning groups with live and frozen foods, providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and separating eggs or adults after spawning. Incubation times and fry size will vary with temperature, but newly hatched fry of small characins generally require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' restricted distribution and limited hobby presence, dedicated captive-breeding documentation remains sparse.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus caldasi is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and is not an established hobby species. Its biology suggests it would suit a soft-to-moderate, slightly alkaline water setup — pH around 7.0–8.0, cooler temperatures reflecting its Andean stream origin — with strong filtration and good water movement to simulate the fast-flowing creek habitat from which it is known.
As a small, active schooling characid it would best be maintained in a group of six or more individuals in a tank with open swimming space and some fine-leaved planting. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful. The natural diet of aquatic invertebrates suggests a preference for small live and frozen foods, though most small characids adapt readily to quality prepared diets. Any aquarist keeping this species would be working largely without established husbandry guidance and should treat the endemic, narrowly distributed status of the wild population as a reason for responsible sourcing and serious attention to captive breeding.
Conservation
Bryconamericus caldasi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. As a recently described species with a known distribution limited to a single creek in the middle Cauca River basin of Colombia, the information base needed for a formal assessment was not available at the time of writing. Its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE).
The Cauca River basin faces significant anthropogenic pressure, including water extraction, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and hydroelectric development — pressures that affect many small endemic stream fishes in Andean Colombia. The narrow range of B. caldasi means that localised habitat degradation in La Libertad Creek could be disproportionately significant for the species. A formal range and population survey, combined with an IUCN assessment, would be a valuable contribution to Andean freshwater fish conservation.
