Bryconamericus alfredae is a small characid first described from the Río Urubamba drainage in Peru and named in honour of Alfreda Bingham, the American heiress and philanthropist whose family funded the Yale Peruvian Expeditions that collected the type material. Reaching no more than 2.5 in in total length, it is a benthopelagic inhabitant of Amazonian freshwaters, assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern. Recent molecular work has brought its placement into question: Román-Valencia et al. (2023) treat it as a junior synonym of Acrobrycon ipanquianus (Cope, 1877), though it continues to circulate under the Eigenmann name in much of the reference literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus alfredae was formally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1927, in the Memoirs of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, vol. 43, part 4, p. 394. The type locality is the Río Urubamba at Santa Ana, Peru, a locality associated with the Yale Peruvian Expeditions of the 1910s. The holotype is held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ), Harvard. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the original combination as Bryconamericus alfredae Eigenmann, 1927, with a note that the name appeared in a Pearson faunal list before Eigenmann's formal account; the 1927 publication represents the first valid description.

The species was placed in Bryconamericus, a large and heterogeneous genus of small characids distributed across South America, traditionally assigned to the family Characidae and to subfamily Hemibryconinae within the broader Stevardiidae lineage depending on the classification followed. A 2023 revision by Román-Valencia and colleagues concluded that B. alfredae is a junior synonym of the earlier-named Acrobrycon ipanquianus (Cope, 1877), also from the Amazon basin; if that treatment is accepted, the valid name becomes Acrobrycon ipanquianus. The synonymy had not been universally adopted as of the mid-2020s, and FishBase and IUCN assessments continued to carry the species under the Eigenmann name. Morphology

Bryconamericus alfredae is a slender, fusiform small characid reaching a recorded maximum of 2.5 in total length in males and unsexed specimens. Like other members of the genus it has the typical characid body plan: a compressed, moderately deep trunk, a terminal mouth, a short adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal, and a forked caudal fin. The lateral line runs along the full length of the flank.

Detailed published morphometrics for this species specifically are sparse in the accessible literature. As a member of Hemibryconinae, it likely shares the group's characteristic combination of a relatively high number of scales along the lateral line, a small maxillary tooth patch, and a plain silvery coloration with a diffuse lateral stripe — the understated patterning typical of many small Neotropical characids that rely on schooling rather than individual conspicuousness. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; females of small characids typically have a deeper abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

The type locality, the Río Urubamba at Santa Ana in Cusco Department, Peru, is a tributary of the Ucayali, itself one of the principal headwater systems of the Amazon. The Urubamba here descends from the Andean foothills into the Peruvian sub-Andean zone, flowing through a mix of montane forest and riverine scrub at relatively low elevation near Santa Ana (modern Quillabamba), where the river is wide and moderately fast-flowing over gravel and sand substrates.

FishBase characterises the species as freshwater, benthopelagic, and tropical, consistent with life in the mid-water to near-bottom zone of clear to moderately turbid Andean-foothill and upper-Amazonian streams. Distribution is recorded for the Amazon River basin broadly. The trophic level of 2.7 inferred from close relatives suggests a diet positioned low in the food web, consistent with the invertivore/omnivore niche common to small characids of this size.

Feeding

No detailed stomach-content studies for Bryconamericus alfredae appear in the accessible literature. The genus Bryconamericus as a whole is understood to be omnivorous, taking small aquatic invertebrates — chironomid larvae, micro-crustaceans, and similar benthos — along with allochthonous material such as terrestrial insects and plant fragments that fall or are washed into the stream. A trophic level of 2.7 is consistent with this broad omnivory, placing the species below dedicated invertivores and well below predatory characids.

In the aquarium, small species of this body form accept prepared flakes and micro-pellets readily and benefit from supplemental live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and micro-worm to maintain condition. The species is not in regular aquarium trade and most information on feeding husbandry is extrapolated from related small Hemibryconinae.

Mating

Detailed observations of courtship in Bryconamericus alfredae are absent from the published literature. Reproductive behaviour in the genus is consistent with the egg-scattering mode general to small characids: males pursue females and eggs are scattered without preparation of a nest site or any substrate-spawning behaviour. No pair bond forms, and spawning is opportunistic rather than strongly seasonal in stable tropical environments.

In stream-dwelling small characids of the sub-Andean zone, courtship is typically brief and occurs during morning hours; males may display lateral flashes of the flanks to gravid females. Because the species is not established in the ornamental trade, hobbyist-derived observations of courtship behaviour are not available.

Breeding

Bryconamericus alfredae is presumed to be an open egg-scatterer showing no parental care, in keeping with the reproductive mode universal in the genus and across small Hemibryconinae generally. Eggs would be scattered among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrate, where they adhere lightly or rest freely; they receive no attention from either parent after fertilisation.

No captive breeding records for this species are known from the hobbyist literature. For congeners kept in research or breeding contexts, incubation at tropical temperatures typically spans 24–48 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days of hatching. First foods for the larvae of small characids of this size are typically infusoria-grade live foods or commercial liquid fry diets, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus alfredae is not a species found in the mainstream ornamental trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist Neotropical collections or scientific institutions. Were it to be kept, its husbandry requirements would follow the template for small, active, schooling Amazonian characids: a well-filtered aquarium with moderate flow, soft to moderately hard water in the low- to mid-20s Celsius, and a school of at least six individuals to permit natural social behaviour and reduce stress.

A planted tank with open swimming lanes, some surface cover, and a dark substrate would suit a fish adapted to the tannin-shaded streams of the Andean foothills. Given its small size — under 3 in — it can be housed with other small, peaceful Neotropical species, including other small tetras and corydoras catfish. Its rarity in captivity means that most aquarist interest in the species is taxonomic rather than practical.

Conservation

Bryconamericus alfredae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, a status reflecting the species' occurrence across the broad Amazon basin and the absence of documented population declines sufficient to trigger a threatened category. The assessment was published in 2014.

The Río Urubamba catchment, which includes the type locality, faces ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, hydroelectric development, and sedimentation associated with upland land-use change in the Cusco region of Peru. These broad threats affect Andean-foothill ichthyofaunas generally, but no species-specific population data exist to quantify their impact on B. alfredae. The recent synonymy proposal by Román-Valencia et al. (2023), if widely accepted, may affect how the taxon is tracked in future conservation assessments. In the interim the Least Concern status remains the formal evaluation.
