Described by John Thomas Pearson in 1924, it is one of dozens of species in the genus Bryconamericus — a sprawling assemblage of schooling, benthopelagic tetras distributed across South America from the Pacific coastal drainages to the Amazon. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2014, reflecting a stable range within the Beni system and no known acute threats at the time of evaluation.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus bolivianus was described by John Thomas Pearson in 1924 from material collected in Bolivia, the specific epithet directly referencing the country of origin. Pearson's work contributed several Bolivian fish descriptions in the early twentieth century; the precise type locality falls within the Beni River basin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Bryconamericus bolivianus Pearson, 1924 as the valid name.

The genus Bryconamericus was long placed squarely within Characidae, but molecular and morphological revisions in the twenty-first century have supported recognising a closely related family, Stevardiidae, for a subset of these small South American tetras. FishBase reclassifies B. bolivianus under Stevardiidae; however, the boundaries of Characidae sensu lato remain a matter of ongoing systematic debate, and the family assignment used here follows the broad Characidae concept. The genus name itself is a compound of the Greek bryko (to bite, gnaw) and a Latinised reference to the Americas — 'biting America' — reflecting the toothed jaw that characterises the group.

A modern taxonomic revision of Bryconamericus covering Pacific coastal and Amazon River drainages documents the genus's morphological diversity and confirms diagnostic characters for bolivianus, including 15–16 anal-fin rays and outer premaxillary teeth approximately as large as those of the inner series.

Morphology

Bryconamericus bolivianus is a small, elongate, laterally compressed characid reaching a recorded maximum of 2.5 in standard length according to FishBase. The body form is typical of the genus: a fusiform, somewhat streamlined fish suited to life in moderately flowing and still waters, with the characteristic Characidae feature of an adipose fin between the dorsal and the caudal.

Habitat

Breeding

Bryconamericus bolivianus has not been bred in captivity under documented aquarium conditions, and no breeding account appears in the available hobbyist or scientific literature. In the aquarium

Bryconamericus bolivianus is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. No dedicated husbandry literature exists for the species, and it is not commercially available through the mainstream ornamental fish trade. The information that follows is therefore extrapolated from the biology of the genus and from general practice with small South American tetras.

As a small, schooling, benthopelagic characid from tropical Bolivian rivers, it would likely require conditions broadly similar to other small Amazonian tetras: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral freshwater in the tropical range, good filtration, and a group of at least six to eight individuals. A planted aquarium with subdued lighting and some surface cover would suit a shy species from a diverse river system. The species' near-total absence from the hobby means any captive specimens would be of scientific as much as ornamental interest.

Conservation

Bryconamericus bolivianus was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List in April 2014. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across the Beni River basin — a large, relatively intact drainage — with no evidence of major population decline or acute threatening processes at the time of evaluation. The low fishing-vulnerability index recorded by FishBase supports the view that the species is not significantly targeted by commercial or subsistence fisheries.

The broader Beni basin faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development in the Bolivian Amazon, which could affect water quality and hydrological connectivity over the long term. However, the 2014 IUCN assessment did not find these threats sufficient to elevate the species above Least Concern. The species' distribution within a large river system and its apparent ecological flexibility as a generalist omnivore are positive factors for long-term persistence, though a reassessment with updated distributional and abundance data would better characterise current status.
