Bryconamericus arilepis is a small, fusiform characin described from the Magdalena river basin of Colombia in 2008, reaching about 3 in standard length and distinguished from its congeners by an unusually high lateral-line scale count. Known only from its type locality in the Andean foothills of Santander department, it remains one of the lesser-studied members of a speciose Neotropical genus, carrying a Data Deficient assessment from the IUCN that reflects the limited information available on its range and population status.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus arilepis was formally described by César Román-Valencia, Juan Ariel Vanegas-Ríos, and Ricardo Ruiz-C. in 2008, in a paper published in the Revista de Biología Tropical (vol. 56, no. 4, pp. 1749–1763). The publication also presented a key to the Colombian species of the genus. The holotype is an adult male measuring 2.5 in standard length, collected from the Magdalena river basin in Santander department, Colombia.

Within the literature the species has also appeared under the name Hemibrycon arilepis, reflecting older generic arrangements for this complex of Andean stream characins. Molecular and morphological studies of Neotropical characins have since placed these fishes in the family Characidae, subfamily Diapominae (also treated as Stevardiidae by some authorities), and Bryconamericus is the currently accepted genus. FishBase and GBIF record the valid name as Bryconamericus arilepis Román-Valencia, Vanegas-Ríos & Ruiz-C., 2008, the authority being cited without parentheses because the species was originally placed in Bryconamericus.

The specific epithet arilepis refers to a feature of the scales, derived from Latin roots — a direct reference to the high lateral-line scale count (50–54 scales) that is one of the species' diagnostic characters and sets it apart from most Colombian Bryconamericus.

Morphology

Bryconamericus arilepis is a fusiform, moderately slender characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in in males and unsexed specimens. The body form is typical for the genus: slightly compressed laterally, with a rounded snout, a terminal mouth, and a small adipose fin behind the dorsal. The caudal fin is forked.

The most diagnostically significant feature is the lateral line scale count of 50 to 54 scales, which is notably high for a Colombian Bryconamericus of this size and is cited as one of the primary characters used to distinguish it in the original description and in the accompanying key to Colombian species. The overall colouration is not elaborated in the available literature but is likely the typical silvery body with a mid-lateral stripe or smudge seen in most members of the genus — modest and unremarkable compared with the ornamental tetras of the hobby.

Habitat

Bryconamericus arilepis is endemic to the Magdalena river basin in Colombia, with the type locality in Santander department in the Andean foothills region. The Magdalena is one of South America's great river systems, draining the high valleys between the Eastern and Central Cordilleras before flowing north to the Caribbean coast; the upper and mid-elevation tributaries in Santander represent a distinct highland-freshwater environment quite different from the lowland várzea habitats associated with many Amazonian tetras.

No detailed habitat data specific to this species are captured in the current literature accessible to this review. By analogy with other Andean Bryconamericus — small, pelagic stream characins classified as freshwater tropical — B. arilepis almost certainly inhabits clear to slightly turbid Andean tributaries with swift to moderate current, rocky or gravelly substrate, and cool-to-warm water temperatures typical of mid-elevation Colombian streams. Its restriction to the Magdalena basin makes it part of a highly endemic freshwater fish fauna shaped by the region's complex Andean drainage history.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary data have been published for Bryconamericus arilepis in the literature accessible to this review. Members of the genus are generally characterised as pelagic, opportunistic omnivores in Andean streams, feeding on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, insect larvae, and plant material or algae that drift into the water column or are grazed from submerged surfaces — a foraging strategy that is typical of small Andean characins across the Magdalena drainage.

In an aquarium context, Bryconamericus species of similar size and body form accept standard tetra fare: flake and small pellets, frozen and live foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter. However, B. arilepis is not an established aquarium fish, and these inferences are drawn from genus-level and family-level knowledge rather than direct observation.

Mating

No published mating observations are available for Bryconamericus arilepis. Bryconamericus species belong to the subfamily Diapominae (Stevardiidae sensu some authors), a group within which internal insemination and follicular gestation of embryos has been documented in several genera. However, not all members of the subfamily share these traits, and whether B. arilepis employs internal fertilisation or conventional egg-scattering is not established in the available sources.

For members of the broader Characidae displaying the egg-scattering mode, courtship involves males pursuing females among submerged vegetation or open water, with spawning resulting in adhesive or semi-buoyant eggs scattered with no subsequent parental attention. Until specific data for B. arilepis are published, the reproductive biology of this species remains unconfirmed.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity has not been recorded for Bryconamericus arilepis in the available literature, and the species is not kept in the aquarium hobby in any meaningful numbers. Its reproductive mode — whether egg-scattering or involving the internal insemination seen in some Diapominae — has not been resolved in published accounts reviewed here.

If breeding follows the egg-scattering pattern common to small Andean characins, it would involve spawning among fine-leaved vegetation with adhesive eggs and no parental care, eggs hatching within a few days at typical tropical water temperatures, and fry requiring very small first foods before transitioning to commercial fry diets. These details remain speculative without species-specific data.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus arilepis does not appear in the aquarium trade and no husbandry accounts have been published. As a small Andean stream characin from mid-elevation Magdalena tributaries, it would almost certainly require well-oxygenated, clean water with good current and cooler temperatures than typically used for lowland tropical tetras — conditions reflecting the Andean foothill environment of its type locality.

The species is not available commercially, and any hobbyist interest is purely academic at present. Researchers working on Neotropical fish diversity in the Magdalena basin would be the primary audience for information on this species, rather than aquarists. Aquarium-keeping notes for Bryconamericus in general suggest small schooling groups in planted tanks with moderate to strong filtration, but these cannot be applied to B. arilepis with confidence given the absence of captive experience.

Conservation

Bryconamericus arilepis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 07 October 2014. The Data Deficient designation reflects the limited information available on the species' distribution, population size, and ecology rather than an absence of threat — it means that a proper assessment of its conservation status cannot yet be made with the data on hand.

The species is endemic to the Magdalena river basin in Colombia, one of the most biodiverse and simultaneously most threatened freshwater systems in the Neotropics. The Magdalena basin supports a highly endemic fish fauna and has been severely altered by agricultural run-off, sedimentation, deforestation of riparian zones, and hydroelectric development across its tributaries. Whether B. arilepis faces specific pressures at its known sites in Santander is unknown, but the broader trajectory of Andean stream fish habitats in Colombia gives reason for concern. Filling the data gap for this species through targeted surveys of the Santander tributaries within the Magdalena drainage should be a priority for future assessments.
