Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus carlosi was described by C. Román-Valencia in 2003 in a paper treating new species of Bryconamericus from the Amazon, published in the Bollettino del Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali di Torino (volume 20, issue 2). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records it as a valid species of Bryconamericus. The type material was drawn from the Río Napo drainage in Ecuador and from the Ríos Putumayo and Orteguaza in the Colombian upper Amazon.
The genus Bryconamericus is placed within the family Characidae and comprises numerous small characins distributed across lowland and foothill river systems from Central America through South America. Distinguishing members of the genus often requires close attention to osteological characters: B. carlosi is noted for 33 vertebrae, a completely ossified pterotic, a bent pelvic bone, and the absence of nasal bones — a combination of characters that helped separate it from congeners known at the time of description.
The species epithet carlosi is a patronym: the original description credits it to Carlos Román-Valencia in recognition of his patience and early assistance during field work.
Morphology
Bryconamericus carlosi is a slender, moderately compressed characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Like other members of the genus it has the typical characid body plan — a streamlined torpedo shape, a small adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin — suited to life in flowing Andean foothill waters.
Diagnostically, the species is characterised by 33 vertebrae, a completely ossified pterotic (a bone of the skull), a distinctively bent pelvic bone, and the absence of nasal bones. These osteological features are the primary characters used in its original description to differentiate B. carlosi from related species. Coloration in life is not described in detail in available sources; as with most Bryconamericus species, a silvery lateral body and translucent fins are typical of the genus, with any specific markings remaining poorly documented in the accessible literature.
Habitat
The species is known from freshwater drainages of the upper Amazon basin, specifically the Río Napo in Ecuador and the Ríos Putumayo and Orteguaza in Colombia. These are sub-Andean and foothill river systems that drain the eastern slopes of the Andes into the broad Amazonian lowlands — environments characterised by moderately swift, clear to slightly turbid water over rocky and sandy substrates.
FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, meaning it occupies the lower and mid-water zones of its riverine habitat rather than being strictly benthic or pelagic. Reported water parameters from FishBase include a temperature of 73 °F and a pH of 6.9 — soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral conditions consistent with Andean foothill streams fed by rain and snowmelt. The species' distribution at the interface of Ecuadorian and Colombian headwater systems places it in a region of high Amazonian fish diversity.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Bryconamericus carlosi are not reported in the available literature. Members of the genus Bryconamericus are generally understood to be omnivorous opportunists, consuming small aquatic invertebrates — including insect larvae and microcrustaceans — as well as algae, organic detritus, and any small food items drifting or present at the substrate surface. Mating
No specific observations of mating behaviour in Bryconamericus carlosi have been published in the literature available for this species. Like most small Characidae, members of the genus Bryconamericus are presumed to be egg-scattering open spawners. Courtship in related small characids typically involves males chasing and displaying alongside females, with spawning occurring in open water or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation with no pair bonding.
Eggs are adhesive and may settle among fine-leaved plants or on the substrate after scattering. No parental care is exhibited — adults do not guard eggs or fry. Spawning in Andean foothill characids may be influenced by seasonal changes in water temperature, flow, and day length associated with the local wet and dry seasons.
Breeding
Breeding records for Bryconamericus carlosi in captivity are not available in the accessible literature. Based on the reproductive biology typical of the genus and of small characids generally, the species would be expected to scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, with hatching occurring within two to three days at typical tropical temperatures. The fry are small at hatching and would require infusoria or similarly fine initial foods.
As with other egg-scattering characids, adults provide no parental care and should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs. Water quality management and the provision of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops are standard approaches for encouraging and collecting eggs from small characins of this type.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus carlosi is not an established aquarium species and is rarely if ever available in the trade. It belongs to a genus that, while scientifically important and species-rich, is represented in the hobby mainly through occasional by-catch imports from Colombia and Ecuador rather than targeted collection or captive breeding. Care requirements, where applicable, can be inferred from the species' natural habitat: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water around 73 °F, moderate flow, and a riverine setup with open swimming space.
Small characids of this type are generally peaceful and best kept as a school in the company of similarly sized fishes. Because the species is benthopelagic, it would likely occupy the lower to mid zones of an aquarium. Little further husbandry information is available; data on this species in captivity remain sparse.
Conservation
Bryconamericus carlosi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment published in 2023 (assessment date 26 October 2022). The Least Concern listing reflects an absence of evidence for population declines or range restrictions severe enough to warrant a threatened category at the time of assessment. The species is distributed across the Río Napo in Ecuador and the Ríos Putumayo and Orteguaza in Colombia — a geographic range that spans two countries and several large drainages, providing some buffer against localised pressures.
However, the upper Amazon and sub-Andean river systems it inhabits face ongoing pressures including deforestation, agricultural runoff, and the long-term effects of Andean upstream land use change. Small, range-restricted characids in this region can be sensitive to habitat degradation even when not currently threatened. The IUCN assessment is the primary conservation reference for this species.
