Bryconamericus charalae was described by César Román-Valencia in 2005, with the holotype (MHNLS 13504, 1.5 in SL) taken from El Charal Stream at Finca El Jaguar, approximately 9 mi northeast of Aroa in Yaracuy State, Venezuela, at around 1640 ft elevation. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid name as Bryconamericus charalae Román-Valencia, 2005, with 182 paratypes deposited in the Museo de Historia Natural La Salle (MHNLS) collections. The specific epithet takes its name directly from the type-locality stream, El Charal.
Bryconamericus is a species-rich genus of small characids distributed across South and Central America. Its limits and internal arrangement have shifted with successive phylogenetic revisions; FishBase places this species within Stevardiidae (subfamily Diapominae), reflecting one current treatment, though the Catalog of Fishes lists the family as Characidae, the placement used here. Regardless of family-level assignment, the genus is characterised by a fusiform body, a relatively small mouth with multicuspid maxillary teeth, and a modest number of lateral-line scales.
Morphology
Bryconamericus charalae is a small, fusiform tetra reaching a reported maximum of approximately 2 in standard length. The body form is typical of the genus: streamlined, moderately compressed, suited to navigating fast-flowing hill streams. Diagnostic characters noted in the original description include fewer than 35 lateral-line scales and multicuspid teeth on the maxillary. The trophic level recorded on FishBase is 2.6 ± 0.3, consistent with a low-level omnivore feeding on plant material and small invertebrates.

Habitat
The known range of Bryconamericus charalae is limited to two small streams in Yaracuy State, northwestern Venezuela: El Charal creek in the Río Aroa drainage and Agua Negra creek in the Río Yaracuy drainage. The type locality lies at roughly 1640 ft elevation — hill-stream terrain rather than lowland floodplain. Both streams drain the coastal mountains of the Venezuelan Andes foothills, a region of considerable hydrological isolation.
The Venezuelan Red Book notes that this species is relatively abundant where it occurs, comprising around 40 percent of the local fish community, but that its extreme range restriction — an area of occupancy estimated at under 20,0 mi² — renders it inherently vulnerable. The surrounding landscape is shaped by agriculture, cattle-raising, and mining activity, all of which affect water quality and stream connectivity. Based on the biology of closely related small Bryconamericus species, breeding would be expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of the subfamily: adults scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or substrate, eggs hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, and the adults provide no parental care and may consume eggs given the opportunity.
If the species were kept and spawned, standard small-characid protocols would apply: condition adults on varied live and frozen foods, provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, separate adults after spawning, and raise fry on infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp.
