Bryconamericus cinarucoense is a small, slender characid reaching just 1.5 in standard length, described in 2008 from the Cinaruco River of Apure State, Venezuela — a blackwater tributary of the Orinoco renowned for its clear, warm, sandy-bottomed floodplain channels. The species belongs to a genus of minor tetras widespread across South America and was distinguished from its Venezuelan congeners by a suite of characters including jaw proportions, dentition, and lateral-line scale counts. It also occurs in the Essequibo River basin of Guyana, placing it across both the Orinoco and Guiana Shield drainages.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus cinarucoense was formally described by Román-Valencia, Taphorn, and Ruiz-C. in 2008, in a paper that also introduced B. singularis and provided identification keys to all Venezuelan species of the genus. The type locality is the Cinaruco River in Apure State, Venezuela, a savanna-zone tributary of the middle Orinoco. The species epithet cinarucoense is a toponym derived directly from the Cinaruco River, indicating where the type series was collected. The Plazi ZooBank archive preserves the original taxonomic treatment and corroborates the 2008 authority and year.

Bryconamericus is a large, species-rich genus of small characids distributed across the Neotropical region from Venezuela and the Guianas south to Argentina. The group has undergone repeated revision, and the limits of Bryconamericus with respect to allied genera remain a subject of ichthyological discussion, but B. cinarucoense is currently placed in Bryconamericus as published. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name and authority as given.

Morphology

Bryconamericus cinarucoense is a small, elongated characid reaching a maximum standard length of 1.5 in. The body shape is streamlined and moderately compressed laterally, typical of the benthopelagic Bryconamericus habit. Vertebral count is 35.

The species is distinguished from its Venezuelan congeners by a combination of characters: the upper jaw extends beyond the lower jaw; the maxilla is short and bears only one or two teeth; pored lateral-line scales number 35–37 (fewer than in related species); scales below the lateral line to the pelvic fin origin count 4–5; and the number of branched anal-fin rays is higher than average for the genus, at 20–21. These meristic and mensural details, published in the original description, form the diagnostic suite used to separate B. cinarucoense from sympatric or parapatric congeners in Venezuelan river systems.

Habitat

The natural range of Bryconamericus cinarucoense spans two major South American drainages: the Cinaruco River of the Orinoco Basin in Venezuela, and the Essequibo River basin of Guyana on the Guiana Shield. The Cinaruco is a blackwater river draining the Venezuelan llanos, characterised by sandy substrates, warm water, relatively low conductivity, and clear to slightly tea-coloured water dependent on season and flow.

FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, found over sandy substrates in both mainstreams and tributary channels. The Guiana Shield connection, documented in the regional fishes literature, extends the species' confirmed distribution into the river systems of Guyana, where Guiana Shield rivers share analogous physicochemical conditions — warm, soft, acidic to near-neutral tropical freshwaters draining ancient sandstone and granitic highlands. The species is strictly a freshwater, tropical-zone fish.

Feeding

Bryconamericus cinarucoense is recorded as omnivorous, with the original description noting a diet that includes aquatic insects and snails. Diet composition data from the original description includes a quantified mean contribution of around 24% for certain prey categories, reflecting the opportunistic, generalist feeding typical of small Bryconamericus species in Neotropical river systems.

As with most small characids in this genus, the natural feeding behaviour is likely one of active foraging near the substrate and in the water column, taking whatever small invertebrates are locally available. Aquatic insect larvae and molluscs form part of the documented diet, but detailed seasonal or habitat-specific dietary studies for this species are not available in the current literature.

Mating

No published mating observations specific to Bryconamericus cinarucoense are available. Based on the biology of Bryconamericus and related small characids, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over sandy substrate during spawning events.

Small Neotropical characids in this guild typically show little external sexual dimorphism outside of breeding condition, when females may appear noticeably deeper-bodied with visible gravidity. Males in many related species display no elaborate courtship structures, though competitive chasing before spawning is common in the group.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Bryconamericus cinarucoense have been documented in the accessible literature or hobbyist records. The species has not achieved any established presence in the ornamental trade, and dedicated breeding trials have not been reported.

By analogy with other small Bryconamericus species, successful captive reproduction would likely require soft, warm, slightly acidic water replicating the blackwater Cinaruco conditions, with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg substrate, and separation of adults from eggs immediately after spawning to prevent predation. Fry in related species are typically small at hatch and require infusoria-level first foods before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. These details remain speculative for B. cinarucoense specifically.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus cinarucoense is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade. At a maximum standard length of 1.5 in it is a small species that, on the basis of its habitat — warm, sandy-bottomed, clear-water tropical rivers — would in principle be suited to a species biotope aquarium themed around the Venezuelan llanos or Orinoco tributaries.

Practical guidance cannot be given in the absence of any documented captive experience. The nearest analogies would be other small Bryconamericus species or similarly sized Neotropical characids from soft-water Orinoco drainages, which typically do best in warm (79–84 °F), soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, with a dark substrate, subdued lighting, and a school of conspecifics. Any aquarist acquiring this species should treat it as a rare, poorly known fish requiring careful observation and documentation of its captive needs.

Conservation

Bryconamericus cinarucoense has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; FishBase records the species as Not Evaluated (NE) per the 2025-2 database version. No formal population estimates, threat assessments, or targeted surveys are known to exist for this species in the published literature.

The Cinaruco River, the type locality, falls within or adjacent to the Cinaruco-Capanaparo National Park in Venezuela, which affords some degree of habitat protection to the river system. The Essequibo basin population in Guyana also occupies a largely intact Guiana Shield river catchment. Neither population is thought to face immediate documented threats at present, but the complete absence of an IUCN assessment means that the species' actual conservation status is unquantified. Given how recently it was described (2008) and how little targeted research exists, basic distributional and population surveys would be valuable.
