Bryconamericus cismontanus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1914, with the original authority recorded as Eigenmann in Eigenmann, Henn and Wilson. The type locality is Villavicencio, in the Colombian piedmont, within the Orinoco River system. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises the valid name as Bryconamericus cismontanus Eigenmann, 1914, with distribution across Colombia and Venezuela in the Orinoco basin.
The species has at times been placed in the genus Knodus by some authors, but modern taxonomy — supported by phylogenetic studies of the subfamily — restores it to Bryconamericus. A 2019 molecular species-delimitation study (PMC/NCBI, doi reference PMC6550444) confirms Bryconamericus cismontanus as a valid species under current classification. The family Characidae is used here following the broadly applied traditional circumscription; some recent works separate the subfamily Stevardiinae (including Bryconamericus) into the family Stevardiidae, and ITIS lists the species under that arrangement. The Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority for the valid name, which is not in dispute regardless of familial placement.
The genus name Bryconamericus combines the generic name Brycon — itself from the Greek bryko, meaning to bite — with America, referencing the distribution of these characins across the New World.
