A small characin of the Andean foothills, Bryconamericus cristiani inhabits the clear, fast-running tributary streams of the upper Orinoco basin in Colombia — the piedmont zone where the Andes give way to the eastern llanos. Described in 1999, it is one of several closely related Bryconamericus species that share these foothill drainages, and it is distinguished from its congeners by subtle dental characters and body proportions rather than by striking colour. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Bryconamericus cristiani Román-Valencia, 1999.

The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae (the true characins) and is among the more speciose groups of small South American characiforms. FishBase places the species within Stevardiidae, a family that has been variously treated as a separate clade within or sister to Characidae; the top-level family field here follows the original description and Catalog of Fishes usage as Characidae. The species is distinguished from sympatric congeners such as B. cismontanus, B. deuterodonoides, and B. loisae by a combination of characters including the zigzag arrangement of the outer premaxillary teeth, the number of small lateral dentary teeth (8–11), and body proportions including a relatively smaller head and eye and a shallower body than closely similar species such as B. alpha and B. loisae. The maxillary carries 3–9 teeth and its position relative to the eye is also diagnostic.

The generic name Bryconamericus derives from the Greek bryko, meaning to bite or gnash, combined with America Latinized — a reference to the genus's dentition and New World distribution. The specific epithet cristiani is a patronym honouring Cristian Román-Valencia, one of the twin sons of the describing author, giving this small foothill fish an unusually intimate name.

Morphology

If kept, a small-characin approach would apply: a group of six or more in a tank with good flow and oxygenation, soft to moderately hard water, and a temperature regime cooler than typical tropical tanks — reflecting the foothill-stream origin of the species. Fine-grained prepared foods supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates would suit its insectivore-leaning diet. It is likely a peaceful, schooling species compatible with other small, non-aggressive fishes from comparable habitats.

Given its apparent endemism to a limited foothill-stream system in Colombia and its absence from established captive populations, B. cristiani would be of interest primarily to specialist characin keepers and researchers.
