Bryconamericus dahli was described by Román-Valencia in 2000. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences) as Bryconamericus dahli Román-Valencia, 2000. The type locality is in the Pacific-draining river systems of northwestern South America, associated with the Patía and Mira basins along the Ecuador–Colombia border.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within the family Characidae, a large and diverse New World assemblage of characins. Bryconamericus is one of the most species-rich genera in the group, encompassing small- to medium-bodied schooling fishes distributed across South and Central America. The specific epithet dahli is a patronym; the precise individual honoured was not documented in the sources available for this article.
Morphology
Bryconamericus dahli is a slender, fusiform characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. In aquarium conditions it typically reaches around 3 in.
