Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus ecai was described by da Silva in 2004, with the type locality given as a creek tributary of the lower rio Taquari, within the Laguna dos Patos drainage, at approximately 29°33'S 52°17'W near Venâncio Aires, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The holotype is MCP 19608, a 2.5 in SL male. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) lists the valid name as Bryconamericus ecai da Silva, 2004 and places it in the family Characidae.
The species belongs to the Bryconamericus iheringii species group, whose defining characters include regularly implanted premaxillary teeth, a sub-terminal mouth, and teeth that are compressed distally. Bryconamericus is a large and taxonomically complex neotropical genus within the family Characidae, distributed broadly across South America. The Catalog of Fishes records the subfamily as Diapominae.
Morphology
Bryconamericus ecai reaches a maximum standard length of 3 in SL. Body depth falls in the range of 33.1–36.9% SL, consistent with the moderately deep-bodied form typical of the genus. The eye is notably small relative to head length — 31.1–33.9% HL — which is the defining character that inspired the species name. Snout length ranges from 26.8 to 32.4% HL, and the anal fin carries 15–18 rays.
A diagnostically important feature of adult males is the presence of bony hooks on the pelvic and anal fins, a character found in many Bryconamericus and allied characid genera and used in determining sex. The body is laterally compressed and the mouth sub-terminal, consistent with the iheringii group diagnosis. Like most small characids, overall coloration is likely silvery with a lateral stripe, though detailed color notes from preserved material are not recorded in the available sources.
Habitat
The species is known from creek systems within the Laguna dos Patos drainage, specifically tributaries of the lower rio Taquari in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Collection sites are described as creeks with clear to turbid water, light to moderate current, and bottoms of stones and sand — a typical subtropical upland stream environment in this part of southern Brazil.
The Laguna dos Patos drainage is a major lowland system in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, draining into the coastal lagoon complex before reaching the Atlantic. Bryconamericus ecai is a subtropical freshwater species; the benthopelagic life-mode attributed to it on FishBase suggests it occupies the water column near but not exclusively on the bottom substrate. Whether the species occurs more broadly within the drainage beyond the known type locality remains poorly documented.
Feeding
No specific dietary data for Bryconamericus ecai has been documented in the available literature. Members of Bryconamericus are generally considered opportunistic omnivores in small streams, taking small invertebrates, algae, detritus, and plant material according to availability. In the aquarium, analogous Bryconamericus species accept quality flake food, small granules, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and microworms. A varied diet is advisable; specific feeding trials for this species have not been published.

Within Bryconamericus and the broader characid family, egg-scattering open spawning is the norm: males pursue females and fertilize eggs externally, with no pair bond or territory maintained beyond the brief act of spawning. The bony hooks on the pelvic and anal fins of males are thought to facilitate contact or clasping during spawning in many characids.
In species with a comparable ecology, spawning is likely triggered by seasonal cues — temperature shifts, photoperiod, or rainfall — associated with the subtropical seasonal cycle of Rio Grande do Sul. Fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged roots provide the adhesive surface onto which eggs may be deposited, though details specific to this species are absent from the literature.
Breeding
Bryconamericus ecai has not been bred in the aquarium hobby under documented conditions, and no captive-reproduction data appear in the available sources. By analogy with related Bryconamericus, the species would be expected to scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, with no parental care; eggs and fry would be at risk of being eaten by the adults and would need to be separated if rearing is intended.
For any aquarist who attempted to breed this species, a conditioning period on live and frozen foods, a slight temperature rise, and the provision of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops would be a reasonable starting point drawn from the general Bryconamericus husbandry literature. Incubation times and fry rearing details are not available for this species.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus ecai is essentially absent from the ornamental trade and is not kept by hobbyists except perhaps by specialist collectors of South American characids. No dedicated husbandry information exists for the species. By extension from related Bryconamericus, it would be expected to do best in a school of six or more individuals in a well-planted aquarium with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water reflecting its subtropical southern Brazilian origins.
Given its small maximum size of 3 in SL and creek-dwelling habits, an aquarium of moderate length with gentle to moderate filtration current, open swimming areas, and some shelter among plants or driftwood would suit it. Its subtropical origin means it can tolerate cooler temperatures than many tropically traded characids, and may not require supplemental heating in temperate climates. Data on tankmate compatibility, sensitivity to water quality, or behavioral quirks in captivity are not available.
Conservation
Bryconamericus ecai was assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient (DD) on 7 November 2018. The DD listing reflects genuine uncertainty about the species' range size, population status, and the degree of threat it faces, rather than an absence of concern. It is known from a limited number of collection sites in the lower rio Taquari basin of Rio Grande do Sul, and the extent of its distribution within the Laguna dos Patos drainage has not been systematically surveyed.
Rio Grande do Sul streams have experienced agricultural intensification, riparian deforestation, and water quality degradation over recent decades, all of which affect small endemic characids. Whether Bryconamericus ecai is genuinely rare or simply poorly collected is unknown. A targeted survey of the rio Taquari drainage with modern sampling methods would be the necessary first step toward a more informed status assessment.
