Bryconamericus ecuadorensis is a small, slender characid from the Pacific-draining rivers and esteros of northwestern Ecuador, described in 2015 from four sampling sites along the Onzole drainage. Reaching just over 3 in standard length, it inhabits shallow, low-transparency waters over detritus and decomposing leaf litter — habitats characteristic of the humid Chocó lowlands. The species is not yet assessed by the IUCN, and its type locality is already under pressure from artisanal mining.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus ecuadorensis was formally described by Carlos Román-Valencia, Ricardo Ruiz-C., Donald C. Taphorn B., Pedro Jiménez-Prado, and Carlos García-Alzate in 2015, in a paper published in Animal Biodiversity and Conservation 38(2): 241–252. The type locality lies on the Pacific coast of northwestern Ecuador, along the Onzole drainage, and the description is based on material from four sites: Estero Sabalera, Quebrada San Marcos, Estero La Comunidad en boca del Onzole, and the Río Santiago.

The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within Characidae, a large and taxonomically complex group of South American characins. The species is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of bony hooks on the caudal-fin rays of males — a sexually dimorphic feature seen in numerous characid taxa — and by specific pigmentation patterns on the humeral and peduncular spots. It is sympatric at the type locality with Bryconamericus dahli. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Bryconamericus ecuadorensis Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., Taphorn B., Jiménez-Prado & García-Alzate, 2015.

Morphology

Bryconamericus ecuadorensis reaches a maximum standard length of 3.5 in, placing it among the mid-sized representatives of its genus. The body plan is the typical slender, fusiform profile of Stevardiinae, with a moderately compressed flanks and a terminal mouth. Meristic data from the original description give 12 dorsal soft rays and 31–35 anal soft rays; the vertebral count is 36–37.

Pigmentation features central to the species diagnosis include a defined humeral spot behind the opercular margin and a peduncular spot at the base of the caudal fin — pattern elements shared with many Bryconamericus but arranged in a manner and intensity distinct enough to separate ecuadorensis from its closest congeners. In males, bony hooks are present on caudal-fin rays, a character used routinely to distinguish sexually mature males in Stevardiinae. Overall colouration, as with most small, stream-dwelling characins, is subdued silvery-bronze with darker dorsal pigmentation, the prominent flank spots providing the clearest visual markers.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the Pacific-draining lowlands of northwestern Ecuador, within the Chocó biogeographic province. Sampling was carried out in esteros and small quebradas feeding the Onzole system, itself a tributary of the Río Cayapas. These are shallow, slow to gently flowing waters with low transparency, neutral to moderately alkaline pH (reported 7.1–8.5 by FishBase), and characteristically high dissolved oxygen, high conductivity, high total dissolved solids, and low turbidity and hardness — a chemical fingerprint consistent with lowland forest streams with high organic input.

The substrate is composed of detritus and decomposing vegetal material, and the surrounding landscape is humid tropical forest. Water temperatures at the sampling sites fall in the range of 68–81 °F. The four documented localities are Estero Sabalera, Quebrada San Marcos, Estero La Comunidad en boca del Onzole, and the Río Santiago — all in Esmeraldas Province. No other populations are documented outside this drainage.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Bryconamericus ecuadorensis a trophic level of 2.6 (±0.3 se), derived from the size and trophic relationships of its closest relatives, consistent with a diet centred on invertebrates, microorganisms, and plant material rather than fish prey. The benthopelagic habits of the species — foraging at and near the substrate over decomposing organic matter — suggest a mixed diet of invertebrates picked from leaf litter and detritus, small benthic crustaceans, and algae or plant fragments.

No detailed gut-content study specific to this species is available in the cache. Based on the dietary profile of closely related Bryconamericus and on the habitat parameters (organic-rich, low-transparency estero waters), it likely supplements invertebrate prey with plant detritus and biofilm. In the aquarium, fish in this dietary guild typically accept fine flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia or chopped bloodworm.

Mating

No species-specific field or laboratory observations of mating behaviour in Bryconamericus ecuadorensis are available in the published record. Based on the reproductive biology of Bryconamericus and the broader Stevardiinae, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, open spawner without parental care — the mode typical for most small characids. The presence of bony hooks on the caudal-fin rays of males is a secondary sexual character found in numerous characid groups; in taxa where this trait has been studied functionally it is thought to play a role in clasping females or other male–female contact during spawning, though its precise function in Bryconamericus remains to be clarified.

As with most characins from this subfamily, courtship probably involves brief pursuits by males, with eggs scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or deposited over suitable substrate in shallow, sheltered stream margins. Seasonal rainfall patterns in the Chocó lowlands likely influence spawning cycles in the wild, with peak reproduction potentially tied to rising water levels or changes in water temperature and chemistry across wet and dry seasons.

Breeding

Bryconamericus ecuadorensis has not been bred in captivity to any documented degree in the available literature. The species is a recent description (2015) from a remote Pacific-slope drainage in Ecuador, and it has not entered the ornamental trade in any meaningful volume. Breeding notes are therefore extrapolated from the reproductive biology of the genus and subfamily.

Like other Bryconamericus, it is anticipated to be an egg scatterer that deposits small, non-adhesive to slightly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over sandy substrate, with no parental care; adults would be expected to consume eggs if not removed. Incubation times, fry-rearing requirements, and clutch sizes remain undocumented for this species specifically. Should specimens become available to experienced breeders, the general approach used for other small Stevardiinae — a well-conditioned pair or trio, fine-leaved spawning medium, and immediate separation of adults after spawning — would be the logical starting point.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus ecuadorensis is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the hobby trade as of the time of its description. It is a research species known primarily from scientific collecting expeditions in the Chocó lowlands. Any aquarium husbandry notes are therefore provisional extrapolations from congeners rather than documented practice.

Should specimens become available, the habitat profile suggests an unheated or cool-tropical setup in the 68–81 °F range, with neutral to slightly alkaline water (pH 7–8.5) and good oxygenation, reflecting its stream origin. A planted tank with open swimming space, a gentle flow rate, and dark substrate to replicate the organic-rich estero habitat would suit it. The species would likely behave as a small, peaceful, shoaling characin compatible with similarly sized companions. The 3.5 in maximum length and typical Bryconamericus body plan suggest it would do well in an aquarium of 23.5–31.5 in length kept as a group. Its rarity makes it effectively a biotope-enthusiast or ichthyologist's fish at this stage.

Conservation

Bryconamericus ecuadorensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; FishBase records its status as Not Evaluated. The species is known only from four sites within the Onzole-Cayapas drainage of Esmeraldas Province in northwestern Ecuador. The original description explicitly notes the impact of artisanal and alluvial gold mining on the type locality and associated aquatic organisms — a serious and ongoing threat to lowland stream systems in the Ecuadorian Chocó.

The Chocó bioregion is one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened tropical wet forest zones, subject to deforestation, agricultural expansion, and extractive industry. A species confined to a single small drainage basin in such a landscape faces a restricted range by definition, and any degradation of the Onzole estero system could have immediate consequences for its population. An IUCN assessment using current criteria would likely find that the species' restricted range and ongoing habitat threats qualify it for at minimum a Data Deficient or Vulnerable listing. Until such an assessment is conducted and protected-area coverage of the type locality confirmed, the species should be treated as potentially at risk.
