Bryconamericus eigenmanni is a small characid tetra endemic to the endorrheic drainages of central Argentina, where its entire known range is confined to the Río Primero system — a tributary feeding the inland Laguna Mar Chiquita. First described from that river in 1906 and later transferred to the genus Bryconamericus, this modest, silvery fish occupies shallow creeks and sandy-bottomed pools in a landscape of carbonate-rich water. Its restricted range and the pressures bearing on its habitat have earned it an Endangered listing on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus eigenmanni was originally described as Astyanax eigenmanni by Barton Warren Evermann and William Converse Kendall in 1906, based on material from the Río Primero in the Province of Córdoba, Argentina. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Bryconamericus by Carl H. Eigenmann, recognising characters that distinguish it from the large, heterogeneous assemblage then housed under Astyanax. The valid name as carried in taxonomic registries is Bryconamericus eigenmanni (Evermann & Kendall, 1906), with the authority in parentheses to reflect that it was not originally placed in Bryconamericus.

The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae (family Characidae) and encompasses small- to medium-bodied tetras distributed across South America, particularly in Andean foothill and upland drainages. A redescription by Lucena, Malabarba, and Perez in 1999 placed the species within the context of Bryconamericus diversity in the La Plata and Atlantic drainages and confirmed its status as endemic to the endorrheic basins of central Argentina — drainages that do not reach the sea but terminate in interior lakes.

The specific epithet eigenmanni is a patronym honouring Carl H. Eigenmann (1863–1927), the prolific American ichthyologist who described hundreds of South American freshwater fishes and did foundational work on Neotropical characid diversity.

Morphology

Bryconamericus eigenmanni is a small, slender-to-moderately built characid reaching up to 2.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase; the redescription records specimens of 2–3 in SL, with corresponding total lengths of approximately 2.5–3.5 in. Like most members of the genus, it has the typical small-tetra bauplan: a laterally compressed, fusiform body, a single short dorsal fin, and an adipose fin. Colouration is not detailed at length in the available literature, but Bryconamericus species are typically silvery with a dark lateral stripe or midlateral band.

Males show a notable secondary sexual character: the first to fourth or fifth branched rays of the lateral fin are curved in mature males, a feature documented in the 1999 redescription. This kind of fin-ray dimorphism — sometimes called bony hooks — is characteristic of many stevardiin characids and plays a role in spawning behaviour. Females lack this modification and are otherwise similar in overall form, though generally larger-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Río Primero drainage in the Province of Córdoba, central Argentina, which flows into the Laguna Mar Chiquita — one of the largest saline lakes in South America. The Río Primero is part of an endorrheic (internally draining) basin, meaning its waters do not reach any ocean, a geographical fact with profound conservation implications for any endemic fish.

The 1999 redescription describes the occupied habitat as shallow creeks roughly 2 ft deep with sandy and rocky substrates, alongside deeper pools reaching up to 5 ft within the same stream channels. Water chemistry is distinctly mineral-rich, with elevated concentrations of carbonate (CO₃²⁻), calcium (Ca²⁺), and sodium (Na⁺) ions — reflecting the semi-arid, evaporation-dominated catchment of the Pampas region. These are hard, alkaline conditions atypical of most characid habitats, which trend toward the soft, acidic waters of Amazonia and the Atlantic Forest.

Feeding

No specific dietary data for Bryconamericus eigenmanni has been documented in the published sources available for this species. By analogy with other Bryconamericus and small characids of the Pampas region, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans — along with plant material and detritus from the substrate and water column.

In the aquarium, closely related Bryconamericus species typically accept a wide range of prepared and live foods. Until detailed dietary studies are published for this species, hobbyists keeping it should offer a varied diet of small-particle foods as data remain sparse.

Mating

Detailed mating behaviour has not been documented for Bryconamericus eigenmanni in the literature captured here. Within Bryconamericus and the broader Stevardiinae, species are generally egg-scattering open-water or plant-spawning characids in which males pursue females and fertilise eggs externally; no parental behaviour is expected.

The curved lateral fin rays found in males of this species — a feature shared by many stevardiins — are thought to function during mating, with the hooks potentially assisting in close-contact spawning events. Mating is presumed to be seasonal in wild populations, tied to rainfall and temperature patterns in the Pampas, though specific data for this species are not available.

Bryconamericus eigenmanni is not an established aquarium fish, and there is essentially no hobbyist literature on its care. It is known almost exclusively from scientific collections in Argentina and has not entered the ornamental trade to any documented extent.

For any aquarist who might obtain specimens through research or conservation programmes, the habitat data suggest a species that prefers cool to warm-temperate water with elevated mineral content and alkaline pH, kept over sand with rocky structure. A peaceful community of similar-sized fish in a well-filtered aquarium with moderate current would likely suit it. Given its Endangered status, keeping and attempting to propagate it should be done only through legal, properly permitted channels, with coordination with conservation authorities.

Bryconamericus eigenmanni is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) with the assessment dated 30 September 2020. These criteria reflect a severely restricted area of occupancy combined with continuing decline in the quality and extent of its habitat — in this case, the Río Primero drainage and its connection to the endorrheic Mar Chiquita basin in Córdoba Province, Argentina.

The species is identified as a priority fish by SHOAL Conservation, which flags the need for awareness and communications efforts alongside research into life history, population trends, and habitat condition. Its restriction to a single internally draining river system that does not connect to larger drainage networks means that local disturbances — agricultural water extraction, pollution, and altered flow regimes in the semi-arid Pampas — cannot be buffered by immigration from elsewhere. There is no second population to fall back on.
