Bryconamericus foncensis was described by César Román-Valencia, José Andrés Vanegas-Ríos, and Ramiro Ruiz-C. in 2009, in a paper published in the Revista Mexicana de Biodiversidad (volume 80, pages 455–463), presenting it as a new species of the genus Bryconamericus from the Fonce River within the Magdalena basin of Colombia. The valid name per Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Bryconamericus foncensis Román-Valencia, Vanegas-Ríos & Ruiz-C., 2009.
The genus Bryconamericus is a large and taxonomically challenging assemblage within the family Characidae, distributed widely across South American river systems. It has historically served as something of a catch-all for small, tetra-like characids sharing a set of meristic and morphological traits, and various species formerly placed here have been moved to other genera as phylogenetic work has refined the group. Bryconamericus foncensis has not been subject to a subsequent revision; it remains in Bryconamericus as originally described.
The specific epithet foncensis is a toponym, meaning 'from the Fonce River', the Colombian waterway in which the type material was collected. It follows the standard practice in Neotropical ichthyology of commemorating the type locality in the species name.
Morphology
Bryconamericus foncensis is a small, slender characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in. Like other members of the genus it has the typical characid body plan: a compressed, moderately fusiform shape, a complete lateral line, a small adipose fin behind the dorsal, and a forked tail. The body is silvery with the faint lateral stripe common to many small Bryconamericus.
A notable feature recorded for this species is the presence of breeding tubercles on the fin rays of males, a secondary sexual character widespread in many South American and North American minnow-like fishes that signals reproductive readiness and plays a role in contact during spawning. Beyond this sexually dimorphic character, detailed meristic counts and descriptions are provided in the original description. The species is benthopelagic — found in the water column as well as near the substrate — in its native river.
Habitat
Bryconamericus foncensis is known from the Fonce River, a tributary of the Suárez River within the upper Magdalena basin in Colombia. The Fonce flows through the Andean foothills of the Santander department, a region of clear, well-oxygenated streams and rivers draining through varied topography. The species is recorded at depths of 0–20 ft in tropical freshwater.
Water conditions in the Fonce River system span a moderately wide range: FishBase records a pH range of 6.0–8.0 for this species, consistent with the slightly acidic to neutral conditions typical of Andean foothill streams in the Magdalena drainage. The Magdalena basin supports an exceptionally diverse fish fauna, and the Fonce system contributes a number of endemic and range-restricted species to that total. No detailed habitat-use or microhabitat data have been published for B. foncensis specifically.
Feeding

Members of the genus Bryconamericus are generally considered omnivorous opportunists — small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae, algae, and plant debris all feature in gut-content analyses of congeners from other South American drainages.

Characids in the Bryconamericus group are egg-scatterers with no parental care, spawning among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate in open water. Males with breeding tubercles are thought to use these structures to stimulate or steady females during the spawning act, a behaviour documented in closely related genera. Whether B. foncensis shows seasonal spawning tied to the Andean hydrological cycle — as is common in Magdalena basin species — has not been formally studied.
Breeding
Breeding has not been reported for Bryconamericus foncensis in captivity, and no published accounts describe its reproductive biology in the wild beyond the inference of typical characid egg-scattering from the family's general biology and the documented nuptial tubercles in males. By analogy with congeners, it would be expected to deposit small, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation or fine substrate, with no parental care from either sex.
Egg numbers, incubation period, and larval biology are all undescribed for this species. Data from other small Bryconamericus in the Magdalena system suggest that spawning is likely tied to the region's wet season when river levels rise and temperatures shift — a common cue for Andean characids — but this remains unconfirmed for foncensis specifically.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus foncensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not available in the ornamental fish trade. It is a scientific species known from collected specimens and the published description; it has no common name and no track record in captivity.
As a small, slender characid from clear, moderately soft to neutral Andean foothill water, it would in principle be suited to a well-oxygenated, lightly planted aquarium with gentle flow, maintained at temperatures consistent with its subtropical Andean habitat. However, its care requirements have not been documented, and acquiring specimens legally would require scientific collection permits in Colombia. For aquarists interested in Neotropical characids from the Magdalena system, more widely available and better-studied relatives offer a practical alternative.
Conservation
Bryconamericus foncensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in October 2014. The DD listing reflects a genuine absence of population data rather than a known threat level: too little information exists to judge whether the species is secure, declining, or at risk. As a species apparently confined to the Fonce River drainage of the Magdalena basin, it has a relatively narrow natural range, which in principle makes it more vulnerable to localised pressures such as water extraction, agricultural runoff, or river modification.
The Magdalena basin faces substantial anthropogenic pressure as Colombia's most heavily settled and economically active river system. Deforestation in Andean catchments, sediment loading from agriculture and cattle ranching, and altered flow regimes affect stream quality across the basin. Whether B. foncensis has experienced population decline as a result of these pressures is unknown. A targeted survey and population assessment would be needed to resolve its status; until then, it remains data-poor on the global conservation ledger.
