Bryconamericus galvisi was described by Román-Valencia in 2000 in a paper treating three new Bryconamericus species from Colombia, published in Revista de Biología Tropical (vol. 48, nos. 2/3: 449–464). The type locality is the Valle de Sibundoy in the Alto Río Putumayo basin, Putumayo Department, Colombia (approximately 5°00'N, 77°23'W), a high Andean valley draining ultimately to the Amazon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for valid names within Characiformes; the name is recorded there as Bryconamericus galvisi Román-Valencia, 2000.
The broader systematic placement of Bryconamericus has been a long-running source of instability within Characidae. FishBase lists the family as Stevardiidae, reflecting a reclassification that has been applied in some revisionary work on the ostariophysan clade that includes these small South American stream tetras. For the purposes of this site the family is given as Characidae, consistent with the broad usage in the major checklists and with the conservative taxonomy followed here. The species epithet honours a Colombian ichthyologist or naturalist; the dedicatee's identity is given in the original description.
Morphology
