Bryconamericus guizae was described by Román-Valencia in 2003, with the type locality given as the río Guiza in the upper Mira River basin, Colombia. The valid name is confirmed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), with authority Román-Valencia, 2003. The species epithet references the río Guiza, the stream from which the type material was collected.
The genus Bryconamericus is the most species-rich genus in the subfamily Stevardiinae (historically placed in Characidae), with around 61 valid species distributed across Cis- and Trans-Andean river basins from Panama to Argentina. The genus is characterised by small body size, simple dentition, and occupation of upland streams. B. guizae falls within the Colombian Trans-Andean lineage and is confirmed as a Colombian endemic by the comprehensive freshwater fish checklist of Maldonado-Ocampo and colleagues (2008). FishBase places the species in Stevardiidae (reflecting the 2020 realignment of the subfamily to family rank), though the top-level family field follows the Catalog of Fishes convention of Characidae in the broad sense.
Morphology
Bryconamericus guizae has a fusiform, normal body form typical of the genus. The dentition consists of eight small teeth. Diagnostic characters that separate it from congeners include the position of the first three pterygiophores in front of the anal fin on the first caudal vertebra, a short ischium process, and a wide rhinosphenoid — a combination of skeletal features not shared by other Bryconamericus known from the same region at the time of description.

No published maximum total length is widely cited for this species; it is expected to fall within the typical Bryconamericus range of small to very small characids, most species reaching 1.5–3 in total length. Habitat
The species is restricted to the upper Mira River drainage in southwestern Colombia, a Trans-Andean basin that drains the western slopes of the Colombian Andes toward the Pacific. Water in Andean upland streams is typically cool, well-oxygenated, and moderately to poorly mineralised, with flow regimes that vary seasonally with Andean precipitation patterns.

The high-altitude stream environment of the upper Mira basin likely imposes seasonal cues — water temperature and flow fluctuations linked to Andean rainfall cycles — that influence reproductive timing in wild populations, though this has not been documented for this species specifically.

Bryconamericus guizae has not been bred in captivity in any documented account available in the literature or hobby records. On the basis of Stevardiinae biology, the species would be expected to scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine vegetation or substrate, with no parental investment in egg or fry care. Incubation and fry development would be expected to proceed at cool, well-oxygenated temperatures consistent with its montane habitat.

Bryconamericus guizae is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. No maintenance or husbandry records from captive specimens appear in the accessible literature. Its high-altitude origin suggests that it would require cool, well-oxygenated water in captivity — conditions appropriate for other upland South American characids — rather than the warm temperatures standard for tropical community aquaria.
Should the species become available, standard care for small Andean Bryconamericus would likely apply: a well-filtered tank with good water movement, cool temperatures (perhaps 64–72 °F based on the montane habitat), neutral to slightly soft or moderately hard water, and a diet of small live and prepared foods. Group keeping in a species tank or with other cool-water small characids would be appropriate. Husbandry details remain speculative until captive records exist.

The combination of a geographically narrow range, high-altitude habitat, and limited survey effort makes B. guizae potentially vulnerable. It does not appear in the ornamental fish trade, so collection pressure is not a documented concern.
