Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus huilae was described by Román-Valencia in 2003 in the journal Memorias de la Fundación La Salle de Ciencias Naturales (vol. 155, pp. 31–49), from specimens collected in the upper Magdalena River basin of Colombia. The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae and is part of the diverse Stevardiinae assemblage of small South American characids. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes serves as the authority for valid names in this group.
The species' validity has since been challenged. A 2017 revision by García-Melo published in the Journal of Fish Biology treated B. huilae as a junior synonym of Bryconamericus tolimae, another Magdalena drainage species. This synonymization is reflected in some literature and databases, and the species' status should be considered nomenclaturally unsettled until consensus is reached. The IUCN Red List assessment (2014) was conducted under the name B. huilae when the species was still widely considered valid; that assessment has not been updated to reflect the synonymization.
FishBase additionally lists the species under the family Stevardiidae, reflecting more recent molecular reclassifications that have elevated the former subfamily Stevardiinae to family rank. Such family-level rearrangements remain in flux across the primary literature and databases.
Morphology
Bryconamericus huilae is a slender, fusiform characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, though most individuals are likely smaller. Habitat
Bryconamericus huilae is known from high-altitude streams of the upper Magdalena River drainage in the Departamento del Huila, in the Andean cordillera of Colombia. The upper Magdalena basin at this elevation is characterized by cool, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water over rocky and gravelly substrates, with temperatures significantly lower than lowland Amazonian streams.

Based on its ecology — a small, active, rheophilic characid from cool, well-oxygenated Andean streams — it would require aquarium conditions that replicate those of high-altitude Colombian rivers: temperatures in the range of roughly 64–72 °F, good water movement, high dissolved oxygen, and clean, moderately hard water reflecting the Andean limestone and volcanic catchment.
Any fish kept under this name should be treated as data sparse for husbandry purposes. Should specimens become available, the general care template for small highland South American characids — a species tank or a community of similarly sized cool-water fishes, strong filtration, and a varied diet — would be a reasonable starting framework.
Conservation
Bryconamericus huilae was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List in October 2014, based on its occurrence in the upper Magdalena drainage. The assessors — Roberto E. Reis, Luz Fernanda Jimenez-Segura, Jose Mojica, Juan Carlos Alonso, and Flávio Lima — considered the species to lack the population decline triggers for a more threatened category at the time of assessment.
The subsequent synonymization of B. huilae with B. tolimae (García-Melo, 2017) complicates the conservation picture: if the synonymy is upheld, the conservation status of B. huilae as a distinct entity becomes moot, and attention shifts to B. tolimae as the valid name for this biological lineage. The upper Magdalena drainage faces ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, water extraction, and habitat degradation in the Colombian Andes, concerns that apply broadly to the endemic ichthyofauna of this drainage regardless of how species limits are drawn.
