Bryconamericus ichoensis is a small characid minnow reaching just 1.5 in standard length, described from a single tributary of the Ichó River in the upper Atrato basin of Colombia. Known only from its type locality — Chaparraido Creek — this inconspicuous, benthopelagic fish distinguishes itself from its congeners by a diagnostic combination of 27–30 anal fin rays and the absence of a caudal peduncle spot. It remains virtually unstudied in the wild and has not entered the aquarium trade; the IUCN assessed it as Data Deficient in 2014.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus ichoensis was described by César Román-Valencia in 2000, in a paper published in Revista de Biología Tropical (volume 48, issues 2–3). The type locality is Chaparraido Creek, a tributary of the Ichó River in the upper Atrato River basin of Colombia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Bryconamericus ichoensis Román-Valencia, 2000; the authority is not parenthetical because the species was described directly in the genus Bryconamericus, where it still resides.

Bryconamericus is a diverse South American genus in the family Characidae, part of the speciose assemblage of small characid minnows that pervade the freshwaters of the Neotropical region. The genus is diagnosed by a suite of meristic and morphometric characters, and distinguishing its species often requires close examination of fin-ray counts, scale rows, and pigmentation patterns. Within Bryconamericus, ichoensis is set apart by the combination of its small maximum size (1.5 in SL), 27–30 anal fin rays, and the conspicuous absence of a dark spot on the caudal peduncle — a character present in many related species.

Morphology

Bryconamericus ichoensis is a very small, slender characid, with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. Like other members of the genus it has the typical characid bauplan: a moderately compressed, fusiform body, a short adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, and small cycloid scales. The caudal fin is forked.

The key diagnostic characters, as noted in the original description, are a high anal fin ray count of 27–30 rays and the absence of a caudal peduncle spot. Many Bryconamericus species carry a distinct dark blotch at the base of the caudal fin; its absence in B. ichoensis is a reliable distinguishing feature when combined with the anal fin count. General body colouration in small characids of this type is typically silvery, often with a faint lateral stripe or mid-body band, though detailed colour descriptions from fresh or live material are not available in the literature consulted.

Habitat

The only confirmed locality for Bryconamericus ichoensis is Chaparraido Creek, a tributary of the Ichó River in the upper Atrato River basin of northwestern Colombia. The Atrato basin drains the Chocó region, one of the world's most biodiverse and rainfall-rich areas, with the river flowing northward to empty into the Gulf of Urabá on the Caribbean coast.

FishBase classifies B. ichoensis as a tropical, freshwater, benthopelagic species — consistent with the ecology of small Bryconamericus generally, which tend to occupy shallow, moderate-current creek habitats near the substrate. No detailed habitat survey or water-chemistry data specific to the type locality has been published in the sources available; the Chocó region typically features warm, soft, and mildly acidic blackwater and clearwater streams, though local conditions vary. The species is known from a single creek, which makes any broader habitat characterisation tentative.

Feeding

No dietary study of Bryconamericus ichoensis has been published. Based on the ecology of the genus more broadly, small Bryconamericus species are typically omnivorous opportunists that consume small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and plant or detrital material. Their benthopelagic habit suggests foraging near or on the substrate as well as in open water.

Given its very small maximum size (1.5 in SL), prey items would be correspondingly minute — microinvertebrates, meiofauna, and small arthropods would all be plausible components of the diet. Data for this species specifically are sparse.

Mating

No field or laboratory study of reproductive behaviour in Bryconamericus ichoensis has been published. Characids in this size class and ecological guild are generally egg-scattering open spawners: males pursue gravid females and fertilise scattered, non-adhesive to weakly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over gravel and leaf litter, with no parental care from either sex.

Whether B. ichoensis follows a seasonal breeding cycle tied to the Chocó's pronounced wet-dry rainfall pattern, or spawns opportunistically when conditions allow, has not been determined. Given that the species is known only from type-locality collections, virtually nothing has been documented about its reproductive timing, fecundity, or mating system.

Breeding

Bryconamericus ichoensis has not been bred in captivity, and no husbandry or breeding account exists in the literature. By analogy with other small, stream-dwelling Bryconamericus, spawning would likely involve scattering adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or substrate debris, with no subsequent parental care — a pattern common across the tribe Stevardiinae and allied small characid lineages.

Egg size, clutch size, incubation period, and larval development are all undocumented for this species. Its extremely small adult size suggests a short generation time typical of microchara­cids, but this remains inference rather than observation.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus ichoensis is not kept in the aquarium hobby. It is a tiny (1.5 in SL), obscure creek species known only from a single Colombian collection site and has not entered the ornamental trade. No husbandry information, care requirements, or captive observations exist for this species.

For aquarists interested in small, stream-dwelling South American characids, the broader genus Bryconamericus includes several species that are occasionally available through specialist channels, though even these remain uncommon. B. ichoensis itself should be considered a scientific specimen rather than an aquarium subject.

Conservation

Bryconamericus ichoensis was assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN in 2014. Data Deficient is not a measure of threat but a statement that insufficient information exists to make a reliable threat assessment — the species' distribution, population size, and trajectory are too poorly known to evaluate.

The species is known only from Chaparraido Creek in the Ichó River tributary system of the Colombian Atrato basin. The Chocó region of Colombia faces significant conservation pressure from deforestation, illegal mining (particularly artisanal and small-scale gold mining, which devastates stream quality), and agricultural encroachment — pressures that affect virtually all freshwater species in the region. Whether B. ichoensis persists at its type locality, has a broader range that remains uncollected, or has declined since its original description in 2000 is unknown. Further field surveys of the upper Atrato drainage would be necessary to move this species from Data Deficient to a substantive threat category.
