Bryconamericus ikaa is a small tetra endemic to the Iguaçu River basin of northeastern Argentina and adjacent southern Brazil, first described in 2004 from tributaries of the Río Iguazú. Reaching around 2.5 in standard length, it inhabits clear, fast-flowing streams where it functions as a specialist aquatic insectivore — unusual among its sympatric congeners, which tend toward broader omnivory. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, it is moderately common in ichthyofaunal surveys of the lower Iguaçu system and represents one of the more thoroughly studied small characids of subtropical South America from a dietary-ecology standpoint.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus ikaa was described by Jorge Casciotta, Adriana Almirón, and María de las Mercedes Azpelicueta in 2004, in Ichthyological Contributions of PecesCriollos, from specimens collected in tributaries of the Río Iguazú, Argentina. The species is treated as valid in the Catalogue of Life. It belongs to Bryconamericus, a diverse Neotropical genus within the family Characidae, the speciose family that encompasses the great majority of tetras.

The genus Bryconamericus unites small to medium-sized characids distributed broadly across South American river basins. B. ikaa can be distinguished from close congeners by a combination of characters including the arrangement and cusp count of the premaxillary teeth — with four to six teeth on the outer row in a characteristic alignment — along with other meristic and morphological features documented in the original description. No commonly used aquarium trade name appears to be established for this species.

Morphology

Bryconamericus ikaa is a small, slender tetra reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2.5 in, making it among the smallest of the species studied in dietary ecology surveys of the lower Iguaçu basin. The body is moderately elongated and laterally compressed, as is characteristic for the genus, with a body form suited to navigating current in fast-flowing stream habitats.

Its dietary specialism as an aquatic insectivore implies that a diet of live and frozen invertebrate-based foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, Cyclops, mosquito larvae, and similar items — would be appropriate in captivity. Were it to become available in the hobby, it would likely do best kept in a group alongside similarly sized, peaceful Neotropical stream species.
