Bryconamericus indefessus was described by J.M. Mirande, G. Aguilera, and M. Azpelicueta in 2004 in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie (volume 111, number 4), based on specimens collected from the upper Río Bermejo basin in northwestern Argentina. The original description placed the species in what was then referred to as a new genus — sources record the genus as having passed through provisional names Nans and Nantis before being formally treated within Bryconamericus — making the authority parenthetical: (Mirande, Aguilera & Azpelicueta, 2004).
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses several dozen small, stream-dwelling characids distributed across Central and South America. The group is notoriously difficult taxonomically: species are often separated by subtle meristic differences, and regional revisions have repeatedly split, synonymised, or reorchestrated the constituent species.
