Bryconamericus loisae is a small characid minnow native to the upper Río Meta basin of Colombia, described by Jacques Géry in 1964 from material collected roughly 200 miles east of Bogotá. Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus loisae was described by the French-born ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1964. The type locality is recorded as approximately 200 miles east of Bogotá, Colombia, within the upper Río Meta basin, a major right-bank tributary of the Orinoco system. The species is confirmed in Colombian freshwater fish checklists and in regional inventories of South and Central American fishes.

The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within the family Characidae, a vast and speciose family that encompasses the majority of neotropical small characins. Bryconamericus itself is one of the larger characid genera by species count, distributed from Costa Rica south through much of South America, and the taxonomy within it has undergone considerable revision as molecular and morphological data accumulate. The valid name Bryconamericus loisae Géry, 1964 is recorded in the standard regional checklist of freshwater fishes of South and Central America.

Morphology

Bryconamericus loisae is a slender, moderately compressed characid reaching a reported maximum of 3 in standard length in males or unsexed specimens, based on FishBase data. Like most members of the genus it has the typical Bryconamericus build: a fusiform, silvery body, a moderate-sized mouth, and the small adipose fin characteristic of the Characidae.

Detailed published meristic and morphometric data for this species are sparse in the available literature. The general body plan is that of a schooling mid-water to benthopelagic minnow — streamlined, fast, and silver-sided, without the bold colour patches or elongated fins seen in more ornamental characids. Habitat

Bryconamericus loisae is recorded from the upper Río Meta basin in Colombia. Bryconamericus loisae is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is rarely if ever encountered in hobby channels. Given its natural ecology — a small, active, schooling characid from warm tropical Andean piedmont rivers — it could in principle be maintained similarly to other small, peaceful Bryconamericus relatives: in a well-filtered, clear-water aquarium with moderate flow, temperatures in the tropical range, and a shoal of six or more individuals. Its small adult size (under 3 in SL) and expected peaceful disposition would suit community setups with comparably sized tankmates, though any such guidance is inferential in the absence of direct hobby experience with the species.

Conservation

Bryconamericus loisae has not received a formal assessment by the IUCN Red List. The species is not listed under any known conservation programme, and its current population status is undocumented. Its range appears to be restricted to the upper Río Meta basin in Colombia, a region subject to the pressures common to Andean foothill watersheds: agricultural expansion, water extraction, sedimentation from deforestation, and land-use change on the eastern slopes of the Andes.

The absence of an IUCN evaluation does not imply the species is secure — many narrowly distributed neotropical characids have simply not been assessed. Given the specificity of its type locality and the limited published records, targeted fieldwork in the upper Meta basin would be needed to establish whether B. loisae maintains stable populations or has experienced range contraction since its original description in 1964.
