Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus macrophthalmus was described by Román-Valencia in 2003. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Bryconamericus macrophthalmus Román-Valencia, 2003; the species has also appeared in the literature under the synonym Knodus macrophthalmus, reflecting the taxonomic instability that has long surrounded the boundary between Bryconamericus and related genera. The type locality is the Río Negro above the mouth of the Río Casiquiare, Amazonas State, Venezuela — a transitional zone connecting the Orinoco and Amazon drainages through the famous natural canal of the Casiquiare.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in South America. It is a large and taxonomically difficult genus, with dozens of species distributed across the continent from southern Central America to northern Argentina, and particularly diverse in the Magdalena Basin of Colombia. Because species limits within the genus are frequently revised as new material is examined, the distributional picture for B. macrophthalmus remains somewhat tentative: records implicate the Rio Negro and Casiquiare drainages spanning parts of Venezuela, Brazil, and Colombia.
Morphology
Bryconamericus macrophthalmus is a small, slender characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. As the species epithet suggests — from the Greek makros (large) and ophthalmos (eye) — the eye is disproportionately large relative to head size, the feature that most immediately distinguishes it from close congeners.
Like other members of the genus, it displays the typical characid body plan: a laterally compressed, fusiform profile, a forked tail, an adipose fin, and a moderately complete lateral line. Coloration in preserved specimens tends toward silver with a diffuse lateral stripe, though live coloration details are not well documented given the species' rarity in collections. No detailed meristic or morphometric data from the original description are available from the cache sources.
Habitat
The Casiquiare River drainage — the type locality of Bryconamericus macrophthalmus — is a remarkable biogeographic zone. The Casiquiare canal is a natural waterway connecting the upper Orinoco to the Rio Negro, a major Amazon tributary, creating a bifurcation unique among large South American river systems. Waters in this region are typically blackwater or transitional: soft, acidic, and tea-coloured with dissolved organic matter, though local conditions vary.
The IUCN assessment categorizes the species' habitat as inland wetlands. The assessors note that although records are few, the species is likely more widespread within the drainage than current data suggest and is probably undersampled rather than genuinely rare. The habitat faces documented threats from mining activities and industrial effluents in the broader Orinoco basin.
Feeding
No specific dietary data have been published for Bryconamericus macrophthalmus. By analogy with the broader genus, it is expected to be a generalist omnivore, consuming small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, terrestrial insects that fall to the water surface, algae, and organic detritus — the typical feeding strategy of small schooling characids in South American rivers.
In the aquarium, congeners of similar size are generally undemanding feeders that accept good-quality flake and micro-pellet foods alongside frozen and live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro-worms.
Mating
No observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Bryconamericus macrophthalmus have been published. The genus as a whole reproduces by open egg-scattering, with males pursuing females and fertilizing eggs as they are released, typically among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or in flowing water over gravel and submerged roots. No pair-bonding or extended courtship display is known in the genus.
As with most small characids, spawning is likely triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels, temperature shifts, or photoperiod changes associated with the Amazonian wet season — though direct evidence for this species is absent.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity has not been documented for Bryconamericus macrophthalmus, and the species is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. By inference from closely related Bryconamericus species, spawning would involve the scattering of small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, with no parental care and a short incubation period at tropical temperatures. Adults would be expected to consume eggs if left in the same tank.
Given how few wild specimens have been collected, nothing is known about fecundity, clutch size, or larval development in this species. Data sparse.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus macrophthalmus is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not known to be available in the trade. Its small adult size (under 2 in SL) and likely peaceful, schooling temperament would in principle make it a manageable aquarium subject if it were to become available — comparable in care demands to other small South American characids from blackwater or transitional systems.
Should specimens become available, water chemistry approximating the Casiquiare region — soft, slightly acidic to neutral, warm — would be the appropriate starting point, with fine-leaved planting and subdued lighting to match the shaded, tannin-rich habitats of the Rio Negro drainage. The large eye suggests adaptation to lower light conditions.
Conservation
Bryconamericus macrophthalmus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in 2021 by a team that included DoNascimiento, Villa-Navarro, Taphorn, Rodríguez-Olarte, and Mojica. The Data Deficient designation reflects not an inference of rarity but a genuine lack of data: the species has been collected on few occasions, and without adequate survey effort it is not possible to determine whether it is genuinely scarce or simply undersampled in a remote and difficult-to-access drainage.
The assessors considered the species likely widespread and potentially abundant within its range but noted that the Orinoco basin faces real and documented threats from artisanal and industrial mining and from industrial effluents. Until more systematic survey work is done in the Casiquiare drainage, the conservation status of B. macrophthalmus cannot be meaningfully refined. A DD listing carries no presumption of safety.
