Bryconamericus megalepis is a small, slender characid reaching no more than 2 in standard length, known from a single type locality in Fortaleza, Ceará, in the coastal drainages of northeastern Brazil. Described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1941 from material collected in the American Northeast, the species has barely surfaced in the subsequent literature — the IUCN considers it Data Deficient, and taxonomists have openly questioned whether it represents a valid species at all, suggesting it may belong instead to the genus Compsura. It remains, in many respects, one of the least-known members of a genus itself regarded as ecologically central to Brazilian river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus megalepis was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1941, in a wide-ranging publication on collections of freshwater fishes from eastern Brazil produced under the auspices of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. The holotype (ANSP 69602) was collected at Fortaleza, Ceará, in coastal drainages of northeastern Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records Fowler, 1941 as the valid authority.

The species' standing has been persistently uncertain. The IUCN Red List notes that its taxonomic validity is questioned and that it may belong to Compsura rather than Bryconamericus — two closely related Characidae genera that have historically been difficult to circumscribe. No systematic revision appears to have resolved the question definitively, and B. megalepis remains known only from its type material. The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the large subfamily Stevardiinae (sometimes historically treated as Tetragonopterinae), and the family Characidae in the broad modern sense.

Morphology

Bryconamericus megalepis is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. The specific epithet megalepis means 'large-scaled' in Greek, suggesting the holotype carried notably large scales relative to similar-sized congeners — a meristic trait Fowler used to distinguish the species in his original description.

Beyond the name-bearing type specimen and Fowler's original figures, published morphological information is extremely sparse. The species is benthopelagic in habit according to FishBase, consistent with the ecological habits of the genus more broadly: Bryconamericus species are generally streamlined, laterally compressed small characids with a fusiform body suited to life in flowing water. No published data on fin-ray counts, colour pattern in life, or additional specimens appear in the accessible literature. Data are described as sparse; confident morphological characterisation awaits fresh material.

Habitat

The only confirmed locality for Bryconamericus megalepis is Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará state in northeastern Brazil, in the coastal drainage basins of that semi-arid region. Northeastern Brazil's coastal drainages are distinct from the great Amazonian and Paraná-Paraguay basins further west — they are comparatively short rivers draining the Borborema Plateau and related highlands directly to the Atlantic, subject to pronounced seasonal rainfall fluctuations and, in the case of the Ceará region, a strongly dry climate for much of the year.

No habitat observations specific to B. megalepis have been published. Congeners in the genus Bryconamericus occupy clear to slightly turbid small to medium rivers and streams with moderate to moderately fast current, often over sand, gravel, or rock substrates and associated with riparian and aquatic vegetation. Water parameters measured in studies of related Bryconamericus species in Brazilian river systems fall broadly in the range of 75–82 °F, pH 6–9, and dissolved oxygen above 5 mg/L — conditions representative of well-oxygenated subtropical or tropical South American streams. Whether these parameters apply to the Ceará type locality is unconfirmed.

Feeding

No feeding observations specific to Bryconamericus megalepis are published. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.7 (±0.3) for the species, which is consistent with a primary consumer or low-level omnivore, feeding on algae, plant detritus, small invertebrates, or a mixture of these.

Congeners within Bryconamericus are generally regarded as opportunistic omnivores that exploit invertebrates, algae, and organic detritus in the benthopelagic zone of stream environments. A trophic level just above 2 is typical of fish whose diet consists predominantly of plant material and detritus, possibly supplemented with small aquatic insects or microcrustaceans. More precise dietary data for B. megalepis cannot be established from available sources.

Mating

No mating observations have been published for Bryconamericus megalepis. Reproductive biology of the species must be inferred from the genus as a whole. Bryconamericus species are egg-scattering open spawners without parental care; spawning in congeners has been associated with faster-flowing habitats, consistent with observations in studies of allied species such as B. stramineus.

Charactid egg-scattering over fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or gravel substrates, with adhesive eggs and no pair bond, is the expected mode. Seasonal environmental cues — particularly rainfall and associated changes in flow and temperature — are likely triggers for reproductive activity in wild populations, as in other small Brazilian characids. Aquarium spawning data are unavailable for this species.

Breeding

No captive breeding records have been documented for Bryconamericus megalepis. The species has not been recorded in the ornamental fish trade and, given that it is known only from type material collected at a single locality more than 80 years ago, has almost certainly not been maintained in aquaria.

By analogy with other small Bryconamericus and allied Characidae, a breeding aquarium would be expected to include fine-leaved plants or substrate for egg deposition, slightly elevated temperatures and possibly increased water flow to simulate seasonal conditions, and separation of adults after spawning to protect eggs. Incubation times and fry requirements in the genus are not well documented in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature for most species; data for B. megalepis specifically are absent entirely.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus megalepis has no recorded history in the aquarium hobby. It is unknown whether living specimens have ever been collected beyond the original type series, and the species has not appeared in trade catalogues or hobbyist literature. The Data Deficient IUCN status reflects precisely this absence of information about the species' current range, population, and status.

Should living specimens become available, the general care requirements of small Bryconamericus would apply as a starting point: a well-oxygenated aquarium with moderate water movement, temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, neutral to slightly acidic to neutral pH, and a diet of small invertebrates, frozen foods, and quality prepared foods. Social behaviour would be expected to resemble the shoaling tendencies typical of small stream characids. Given the profound uncertainty about this species' taxonomy and the scarcity of any data, little further can be said with confidence.

Conservation

Bryconamericus megalepis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 7 November 2018 and published in 2021. The assessment notes that the species is known only from type material from Fortaleza, Ceará, and that even its taxonomic validity is in question — it may prove to belong to the genus Compsura. In the absence of population data, ecological information, and confirmed modern records, no conservation measures are in place and none can meaningfully be designed.

The coastal drainages of northeastern Brazil face significant pressure from agricultural water abstraction, dam construction, urban growth, and periodic severe drought linked to regional climate variability — threats that affect freshwater biodiversity broadly in the Caatinga biome region. Whether B. megalepis still persists at or near its type locality is unknown. Resolving even the most basic question — whether this is a valid species and whether it survives today — would require targeted collecting surveys in the Fortaleza region and molecular work against allied Compsura and Bryconamericus taxa.
