Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus misei was formally described by Pedroso, Deprá & Pavanelli in 2024, with the original description published in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology. The type locality is the rio Bonito and its tributaries draining to the rio Capivara in the Piquiri basin, state of Paraná, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name; the species is currently placed in Bryconamericus Eigenmann, 1907, where it remains.
Bryconamericus is one of the most species-rich genera of small New World characids, distributed widely across South American river drainages from Venezuela and Colombia south through Brazil and Argentina. The genus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae (family Characidae) — a clade of small stream tetras united by, among other characters, the presence of a complex reproductive accessory organ in males of many species. Within this diverse assemblage, B. misei is distinguished primarily by its body proportions and the geographic restriction of its known range to tributaries of the upper Paraná basin in highland Paraná state.
Morphology
Bryconamericus misei reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in, making it one of the smaller members of its genus. The body is relatively deep for a Bryconamericus, with body depth measured at 27.8–31.8% of standard length — a character used in the original description to help distinguish it from congeners occurring in the same river systems.
In overall appearance the species conforms to the typical Bryconamericus bauplan: a fusiform, laterally compressed, silvery tetra with a moderately large eye, a small terminal mouth, and the prominent lateral line characteristic of stream-adapted characids. No striking colour pattern distinguishes it; the flanks are silver with a diffuse mid-lateral stripe, the fins largely hyaline. Males in breeding condition develop nuptial tubercles on the head and on the margins of scales — a form of secondary sexual dimorphism common across the Stevardiinae and serving as the primary visible character separating the sexes.
Habitat
The species is known from tributaries of three major sub-basins of the upper Paraná: the Piquiri, the Ivaí, and the Tibagi river systems, all draining the highlands of Paraná state in southern Brazil. Confirmed collection localities span an altitudinal range of approximately 498 to 900 metres above sea level — considerably higher than most lowland Bryconamericus species — and the streams at these elevations are characteristically cool, clear, and fast-flowing with high oxygen concentrations.
Benthic microhabitat described from collection sites includes a substrate of small stones, pebbles, and sand, with well-developed riparian vegetation and marginal cover. These are typical attributes of highland-stream riffles and runs in the Atlantic Forest zone of southern Brazil. The combination of high altitude, cool temperature, and dependence on intact riparian corridors means the species is sensitive to catchment disturbance; the Paraná highlands have experienced extensive deforestation and agricultural conversion.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study has been published specifically for Bryconamericus misei. Members of the genus are broadly omnivorous opportunists, foraging in the water column and at the substrate surface for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects fallen to the surface — together with fine plant material, algae, and detritus. Highland-stream Bryconamericus generally feed in close association with the bottom, exploiting the invertebrate community living among stones and pebbles.
In the aquarium, related Bryconamericus species accept prepared foods including fine flake and small granules, supplemented readily with live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and micro-worms. Given that B. misei inhabits cool, fast-flowing highland streams, it likely performs best at lower temperatures than typical tropical tetras.
Mating
Like other members of the Stevardiinae, Bryconamericus misei is believed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males in reproductive condition are distinguished by nuptial tubercles on the head and scale margins — a widespread secondary sexual character in the subfamily. These structures are thought to facilitate contact during spawning, potentially stimulating ovulation or assisting the male in maintaining position alongside a female.
No field observations of natural spawning behaviour have been published for B. misei. Based on closely related highland-stream Bryconamericus, spawning is expected to occur among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or over gravel riffles, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited in small numbers and abandoned immediately. The precise timing of the reproductive season in the highland streams of Paraná is not documented for this species.
Breeding
Bryconamericus misei has not been captive-bred in any documented account available at the time of writing. As an egg-scatterer conforming to the general Bryconamericus pattern, captive breeding, if attempted, would likely follow the template established for similar small highland-stream characids: conditioning adults on a varied live and frozen diet, providing fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops over a gravel substrate, and maintaining cool, well-oxygenated water with gentle flow.
Eggs would be expected to be small, adhesive or weakly adhesive, and vulnerable to predation by the adults; standard practice would be to remove spawning medium to a separate, shaded hatching container. Incubation duration at cool temperatures (likely 64–72 °F for a highland species) would be longer than for lowland tropical tetras — perhaps 48–72 hours or more — with small, planktonic fry requiring infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first feeds before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Data specific to this species are sparse.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus misei is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be available through normal trade channels at the time of writing. It was described only in 2024 from highland stream collections in Brazil and has no recorded common name. Any specimens entering the hobby would be wild-caught research by-catch, and responsible handling would require replication of the species' cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated highland habitat — conditions that differ markedly from the warm-water community tanks in which most tetras are kept.
If kept, a species of this kind would benefit from a hillstream-oriented setup: a long tank with good surface agitation or powerhead-driven current, a substrate of fine gravel and smooth pebbles, cool temperatures in the range of 63–72 °F, and a school of at least six to encourage natural behaviour. Water quality must be high, as highland-stream fish are intolerant of elevated nitrates and dissolved organics. Data on specific care requirements are sparse; aquarists interested in Bryconamericus should consult the literature for related species.
Conservation
Bryconamericus misei has not received a formal IUCN Red List assessment as of the time of this writing; the species was described in 2024 and has not yet been evaluated under IUCN criteria. Its restricted known range — confined to tributaries of the Piquiri, Ivaí, and Tibagi basins in highland Paraná state — combined with its specialisation for cool, clear, fast-flowing streams at 500–900 metres altitude suggests inherent vulnerability to habitat degradation.
The upper Paraná highlands of southern Brazil have experienced extensive land-use change, and riparian vegetation — critical for maintaining stream temperature, oxygen levels, and substrate quality in highland streams — is fragmented across much of the range. Agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and the disruption of natural flow regimes through water abstraction and dam construction pose ongoing pressures on highland-stream fish communities throughout Paraná. The recent formal description of B. misei underscores how many narrowly endemic Brazilian stream fishes remain undescribed or poorly known, and therefore invisible to conservation priority-setting processes until named.
