Bryconamericus multiradiatus is a diminutive characid endemic to the Atrato River basin of northwestern Colombia, described by George Dahl in 1960 from a small stream near the village of Riosucio. Reaching barely 1 in in total length, it is one of the smallest members of an already small-bodied genus, and it remains virtually unknown in the aquarium hobby. The IUCN assessed it as Data Deficient in 2014, reflecting how little is documented about its distribution, population size, and ecology.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus multiradiatus was described by George Dahl in 1960 in his work on new freshwater fishes from western Colombia, published in the botanical and natural history journal Caldasia. The type locality is a small brook in front of the village of Riosucio in the Atrato River basin of northwestern Colombia. The species has subsequently also been recorded from Quebrada Tendal, another drainage in the same municipality.

The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae — a vast and ecologically diverse assemblage of small neotropical characins sometimes collectively called tetras, though that name covers many unrelated lineages. FishBase notes that the species is now sometimes placed in the family Stevardiidae following modern phylogenetic revisions of the Characidae, though the top-level family designation used here follows the Catalog of Fishes. The specific epithet multiradiatus refers to the relatively high number of fin rays, which distinguished this species from its congeners as Dahl originally described it.

Morphology

Bryconamericus multiradiatus is a very small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 1 in for males and unsexed individuals. Like other Bryconamericus it is a slender, somewhat fusiform characid with a modest adipose fin — the hallmark of the broader characin lineage — and a forked caudal fin. Detailed meristic and morphometric data from the original 1960 description are the primary source for distinguishing it from congeners.

Data on live coloration in wild-caught fish are sparse in the available literature. As a small, stream-dwelling characid it likely shows the silvery flanks and a faint lateral stripe typical of the genus, but no detailed photographic or colour records were located in the sources reviewed for this account. Further field work is needed to characterise the species' appearance fully.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Atrato River basin in the Chocó region of northwestern Colombia, one of the most biodiverse and rainfall-rich tropical regions on earth. The type locality is described as a small brook near Riosucio, and additional records from Quebrada Tendal confirm it occupies headwater stream and creek habitats in this basin. The IUCN classifies its habitat as freshwater inland wetlands, specifically permanent streams and creeks.

The Atrato basin drains one of the wettest catchments in South America, characterised by low-gradient floodplain and foothill streams with typically soft, acidic, sediment-laden water. No detailed physico-chemical measurements for the specific sites where B. multiradiatus has been collected were found in the reviewed sources. The IUCN notes that the species has no confirmed occurrence within any formally protected area, making habitat integrity outside reserves the key variable for its persistence.

Feeding

No published dietary studies for Bryconamericus multiradiatus were located in the sources reviewed. Bryconamericus species generally are opportunistic micro-predators and omnivores of small stream habitats, taking zooplankton, small aquatic invertebrates, and organic detritus in proportion to availability. The very small adult size of B. multiradiatus (under 1 in TL) suggests a diet limited to correspondingly minute prey — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and similar invertebrates.

Given the scarcity of data, extrapolating further from congener biology is the most that can be said with confidence. Field studies targeting this species would substantially improve understanding of its trophic role in the Atrato headwater community.

Mating

No specific information on reproductive behaviour in Bryconamericus multiradiatus has been published in the sources reviewed. Characids in this genus are generally understood to be egg-scatterers with no parental care, spawning in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation and submerged structure in their stream habitat. Males typically show minor size or fin differences relative to females at sexual maturity, but no dimorphism data specific to this species were found.

Spawning seasonality in Atrato basin stream fishes is likely influenced by the pronounced wet-dry rainfall cycles of the Chocó region, but this has not been documented for B. multiradiatus specifically. The species is not recorded from the aquarium trade, so no hobbyist observations of courtship behaviour are available to supplement the sparse field record.

Breeding

Bryconamericus multiradiatus has not been bred in captivity in any documented account. Based on the biology of the genus and the broader Characidae, it would be expected to scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved substrate, with no parental guarding and a short incubation period typical of small tropical characins. Clutch size and fecundity data are unknown.

The species' near-total absence from the hobby means there is no practical husbandry knowledge to draw on. Should it ever become available, the standard approach for small, soft-water characins — conditioned adults, a well-planted or moss-covered breeding vessel, removal of adults after spawning, and infusoria or commercial micro-foods for the fry — would be a reasonable starting point.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus multiradiatus is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is essentially unknown in the hobby. No aquarium maintenance records were located in the sources reviewed. Its extremely small adult size (under 1 in) would in principle make it suitable for nano or species-only aquarium setups, and like other small Bryconamericus it would likely do best in soft, slightly acidic, well-oxygenated water reflecting its Chocó stream origins.

In the absence of any trade or husbandry literature, nothing more specific can be recommended. Aquarists who encounter this species should treat it as a sensitive stream species requiring stable, clean water and small live or frozen foods appropriate to its body size. Until field collections bring specimens into legitimate captive study, it remains a species known only from preserved museum material and a brief IUCN assessment.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Bryconamericus multiradiatus as Data Deficient (DD) in October 2014, with the assessment published in 2016. The assessors — Villa-Navarro and Sanchez-Duarte — concluded that population size, trends, and the full extent of the species' range are insufficiently known to assign a threat category. It has been recorded from only two localities: the type-locality brook near Riosucio and Quebrada Tendal in the same municipality, both in the Atrato basin of northwestern Colombia.

The IUCN notes that no occurrence within a formally protected area has been confirmed, and that potential threats include deforestation and the associated degradation of riparian and headwater habitats — pressures that are acute throughout the Chocó bioregion. The extremely narrow known range, combined with the Colombian Chocó's documented rates of forest loss, means the species may be at greater risk than its current Data Deficient status conveys. Targeted surveys to determine the actual extent of its distribution and abundance are the most pressing conservation need.
