Bryconamericus orinocoensis was described by Carlos Román-Valencia in 2003, with the type locality given as the Río Orinoco at Esmeralda, Amazonas State, Venezuela. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Bryconamericus orinocoensis Román-Valencia, 2003. The distribution extends beyond the type locality to encompass the Mavaca, Vaupés, and Cataniapo river drainages, reaching into Colombia.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae and is a large, widespread assemblage of small, slender characins ranging across South and Central America. The name combines the Greek bryko (to bite, referring to the toothed jaw dentition shared across the broader Brycon lineage) with America, latinised — effectively 'the American biting characin.' The genus has undergone considerable taxonomic revision over the decades as molecular and morphological tools have been applied, and some former Bryconamericus species have been reassigned to other genera; orinocoensis has remained stable in placement since its description.
Morphology
Bryconamericus orinocoensis is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in, based on male or unsexed specimens reported by FishBase. Like other members of the genus, the body form is fusiform and somewhat laterally compressed, with a relatively large eye, a terminal mouth bearing the characteristic Bryconamericus dentition, and a complete lateral line. The overall appearance is typical of small stream characins: silver-flanked with a faint mid-lateral stripe, a small adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin.

For aquarists wishing to attempt breeding, a separate, densely planted or mop-equipped tank with soft, slightly acidic, warm water and good water quality would be the standard starting point for soft-water Orinoco-basin characids. Bryconamericus orinocoensis is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade, and there are no established husbandry accounts for this specific species. Its remote range in the upper Orinoco — one of the least-collected regions in South America — means wild specimens rarely if ever reach export channels, and no captive-bred stock is known to exist commercially.
For aquarists who do encounter specimens, the small size (under 1 in SL) and presumed schooling habit suggest it would be best kept in a group in a well-filtered tank with soft, acidic to near-neutral water matching its Orinoco-basin origins. A biotope setup with fine substrate, leaf litter, and minimal current would approximate its natural environment. Given the data gaps, any care guidance should be treated as provisional and informed by experience with similarly sized Orinoco-basin Bryconamericus.
Conservation
Bryconamericus orinocoensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is formally Not Evaluated (NE). Deforestation, gold mining, and agricultural encroachment are ongoing pressures in parts of the Venezuelan and Colombian Amazon, and small, range-restricted stream characids are inherently vulnerable to localised habitat degradation. Systematic surveys across the Orinoco headwaters would be needed to determine whether this species faces any meaningful threat.
