Bryconamericus ornaticeps was described by C.R.S.F. Bizerril and P.R. Perez-Neto in 1995. The type locality, as registered in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Rio Macacu at Cachoeira de Macacu in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; the holotype is deposited at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP 69602, per Lima et al. 2003 checklist). The valid name is retained in Bryconamericus, where it was originally placed, with authority in parentheses not required since no generic transfer has been made.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae, the large and cosmopolitan family of characins. Phylogenetic work on Neotropical characins has refined the placement of many Bryconamericus species within the subfamily Stevardiinae, and molecular barcoding has confirmed the species validity of B. ornaticeps as a discrete lineage endemic to a single river basin. The genus is widespread across tropical and subtropical South America, with many species occupying small streams and headwaters.
Morphology
Bryconamericus ornaticeps is a small characid reaching a maximum standard length of 2.5 in. Feeding

Should specimens become available, care would follow the model for small, shoaling stream tetras: a well-filtered aquarium with gentle current, ample swimming space, and a group of at least six individuals to maintain natural shoaling behaviour.
Water parameters reflecting the warm, tropical Atlantic Forest streams of Rio de Janeiro — temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, soft to moderately hard water, near-neutral pH — would provide appropriate conditions. A planted tank with open central swimming areas, subdued or dappled lighting, and dark substrate would suit the species. Peaceful community tankmates of similar size present no compatibility concerns.
Conservation
Bryconamericus ornaticeps is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed in 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) of Brazil. Despite the LC rating, the species' restricted range — confined to a single river basin in Rio de Janeiro state — makes it inherently sensitive to habitat degradation within that catchment.
The Macacu River basin lies within the Atlantic Forest biome, one of the most deforested and fragmented biomes on Earth. Ongoing threats to Atlantic Forest streams include deforestation, agricultural runoff, urban encroachment near Guanabara Bay, and water extraction. Continued monitoring of the Macacu basin's fish communities is warranted given the species' endemism and the ongoing pressures on Atlantic Forest freshwater ecosystems.
