Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus oroensis was described in 2013 by Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., Taphorn, and García-A., as part of a paper treating three new species of Bryconamericus. The holotype is a male (MEPN 11140) measuring 3 in standard length, collected from rivers associated with El Oro province in southern Ecuador. The species is placed in the family Characidae, order Characiformes, and belongs to the large and taxonomically intricate genus Bryconamericus, which spans much of tropical and subtropical South America.
The specific epithet oroensis is a Latinised adjective derived from El Oro, the Ecuadorian province from which the type material was collected. El Oro ("gold" in Spanish) is the westernmost province of Ecuador's Amazonian drainage and also borders the Pacific slope, giving the name a geographic precision that anchors the species firmly to its type locality.
