Bryconamericus patriciae was described by da Silva in 2004, with holotype MCP 19615, a 2 in SL male, collected from the headwaters of the rio Pelotas — a tributary of the rio Uruguay drainage — and the rio das Antas, which drains into the Laguna dos Patos system, both in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. The specific epithet patriciae is a feminine patronym; the honoree is not formally discussed here beyond what the original description establishes.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the speciose subfamily Stevardiinae within the family Characidae and comprises small, fusiform characids distributed across much of tropical and subtropical South America. The genus has historically been a catch-all for medium-bodied, silvery stenohaline tetras, and its composition continues to be refined by molecular and morphological studies. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Bryconamericus patriciae da Silva, 2004 as the valid name. The species is distinguished from its congeners by a suite of morphological characters; paratype specimens measured 2–3 in SL, documenting notable size variation within the type series.
Morphology
Bryconamericus patriciae is a slender, fusiform characid with the streamlined body plan typical of fast-water Bryconamericus — a relatively compressed, laterally flattened profile adapted for life in flowing channels. FishBase records a maximum length of 2.5 in standard length. The species shares the family's characteristic adipose fin and a single row of small teeth in each jaw suited to seizing invertebrate prey.
Colouration in preserved specimens is typical of the genus: a pale silvery ground colour with a dark, often diffuse lateral stripe running from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, and a small dark spot or smudge at the base of the caudal fin. Live colouration adds a translucent, faintly yellowish hue to the flanks. As with many small characids, detailed external morphological characters — lateral-line scale counts, fin-ray formulae, and proportional measurements — are the primary means of distinguishing this species from sympatric or syntopic congeners in the field.
Habitat
The species is native to the upper reaches of the rio Pelotas (a major headwater of the rio Uruguay) and the rio das Antas (Laguna dos Patos drainage) in the highlands of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. These are cool-to-cold, clear-water streams flowing over rocky and stony substrates at elevation, with moderate to strong current. FishBase characterises the habitat as rivers and creeks with clear water, light to strong current, and rocky-stony bottoms — conditions consistent with the Planalto Meridional uplands.
The thermal regime is notably cooler than most tropical South American fish habitats: FishBase records a lower thermal bound of around 45 °F for this species, reflecting the seasonal cold of the southern Brazilian highlands, where winter water temperatures can drop well below the norms of tropical Amazonian systems. Feeding

Recorded prey items include larvae of Diptera (chironomid midges and blackflies of the family Simuliidae), Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies, likely as caterpillars or adults fallen onto the water surface), Trichoptera (caddisfly larvae), and nymphs of both Ephemeroptera (mayflies) and Plecoptera (stoneflies).
This dietary profile is typical of a drift-feeding rheophile: a fish positioned in or near the current, intercepting invertebrate drift as it washes down from upstream riffles. The prominence of Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera nymphs — both indicators of high water-quality, cool, well-oxygenated streams — is consistent with the rocky, fast-water habitat. In captivity, similar species accept sinking pellets and small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia, and chironomid larvae; a varied diet that mimics the invertebrate drift the fish is adapted to consume will keep it in best condition.
Mating
No detailed field observations of mating behaviour specific to Bryconamericus patriciae have been published. Like other small Bryconamericus and similar Stevardiinae characids, the species is expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, following the broad pattern of open-water or substrate spawning typical of the subfamily.
In cool, fast-flowing upland streams, many rheophilic characids time reproduction to seasonal cues — rising water temperature in spring, changes in flow regime, or photoperiod — so breeding is likely seasonal in the wild rather than the near-continuous spawning seen in warmer, more stable-environment species. No aquarium breeding accounts are known in the hobby literature for this species specifically, but the general approach used for temperate Bryconamericus — a cooler spawning period, slightly reduced temperature in winter, and a brief temperature rise in spring — is the logical starting point.
Breeding
Detailed breeding accounts for Bryconamericus patriciae in captivity have not been published. Based on the biology of the genus and the species' cool-water, rheophilic ecology, spawning is expected to follow egg-scattering open-water or fine-substrate modes, with adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over a gravel or sandy bottom, and no parental care.
The cold tolerance of this species (down to approximately 45 °F, per FishBase) suggests that, as with other temperate South American characids, conditioning involves a cool rest phase simulating the southern Brazilian winter, followed by a gradual warming to trigger spawning in spring. Fry, if produced, would be expected to require small invertebrate foods — infusoria and newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Until dedicated breeding reports appear in the literature or hobby, the information here remains inferred from family-level biology rather than species-specific observation.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus patriciae is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and is essentially unknown as an aquarium species. Its cool-water requirements — tolerating temperatures as low as approximately 45 °F and likely preferring a range well below the tropical norm — make it unsuitable for standard heated tropical community tanks but a candidate for unheated or cool-water aquaria suited to temperate South American fishes.
Any aquarium housing this species should provide good water flow, high oxygenation, and a rocky or gravel substrate that reflects its fast-water stream habitat. Clear water and moderate to strong current are important for the fish's health and activity. As a small schooling characid it should be kept in groups of six or more; tankmates, if any, should share similar cold-water tolerance. The diet should include small live and frozen invertebrate foods. Given the species' limited presence in the hobby, most interest in it is from specialist collectors of South American rheophilic fishes rather than the general aquarium market.
Conservation
Bryconamericus patriciae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), the Brazilian federal conservation authority. The LC listing reflects the species' occurrence across two major drainage systems in Rio Grande do Sul — the rio Uruguay and the Laguna dos Patos drainages — and the absence of evidence of rapid population decline.
None the less, the species is restricted to the upland stream systems of southern Brazil, and cool, clear-water rheophilic habitats in this region face increasing pressure from agricultural runoff, riparian deforestation, and altered hydrology that can raise water temperatures and reduce oxygen levels — all factors adverse to a specialist of cold, fast-flowing streams. Stonefly and mayfly nymphs, which form part of this species' diet, are sensitive bioindicators of water quality, so the continued health of the species is linked to the integrity of its high-quality stream habitat.
