Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus pinnavittatus was described by Fernando C. P. Dagosta and André L. Netto-Ferreira in 2015, in a paper published in the journal Zootaxa (3911(3):433–442, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.3911.3.9). The type locality is the lower rio Teles Pires, which drains into the rio Tapajós in the state of Mato Grosso / Pará, central Brazil. The species belongs to Bryconamericus Eigenmann, a large and taxonomically complex genus of small characids distributed across South and Central America.
Bryconamericus is placed within the family Characidae (order Characiformes). Several species formerly included in this genus have been redistributed following molecular and morphological revisions, and the boundaries of Bryconamericus sensu stricto remain an active area of systematic research. The valid name as established in the original description is Bryconamericus pinnavittatus Dagosta & Netto-Ferreira, 2015; because the species was described in this genus and remains there, no parenthetical authority is used.
The species is set apart from congeners principally by a low number of branched anal-fin rays (11–13, compared with 15 or more in related species) and by the possession of only two maxillary teeth, where most congeners carry three or more. The caudal-fin band is also a useful field character.
Morphology
Bryconamericus pinnavittatus is a small, slender characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in — placing it at the compact end of a genus whose members are already generally small. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the typical Bryconamericus manner, with a relatively small head and a terminal mouth. Meristic data from the original description indicate 10 dorsal soft rays and 14–16 anal soft rays, with the branched component of the anal fin (11–13 branched rays) being distinctly lower than in most congeners and a primary diagnostic feature of the species.
The most conspicuous colour marking is a dark vertical band at the base of the caudal fin, present in preserved and live specimens and referenced directly in the species epithet. Whether additional pigmentation patterning distinguishes it from other local small characids in life has not been detailed in available sources; overall coloration is likely the pale to silvery tone common to the genus, with the caudal band as the standout feature. Sexual dimorphism, if any, has not been described in the literature available for this species.
Habitat
The species is known from the lower rio Teles Pires, a significant right-bank tributary of the rio Tapajós system in central Brazil. The Tapajós drains portions of Mato Grosso and Pará and enters the Amazon main stem near the city of Santarém. The Teles Pires and its lower reaches support a diverse and partially endemic ichthyofauna, as documented in regional ichthyological surveys including the Ohara et al. (2017) guide to the fishes of the Teles Pires.
Specific microhabitat data for B. pinnavittatus — substrate type, depth, flow regime, vegetation associations — have not been detailed in the sources surveyed. FishBase characterises the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, occupying tropical conditions consistent with the lower Tapajós basin. Based on the general ecology of Bryconamericus in comparable lowland Amazonian drainages, small individuals are typically found in shallow marginal zones, flooded areas, or slow side channels with leaf litter and fine sediment, but this inference cannot be confirmed specifically for this species with available data.
No precise water chemistry records (temperature, pH, conductivity) for the collection sites have been located. General conditions in the lower Teles Pires are those of a warm tropical river with soft-to-moderately soft, slightly acidic water typical of the broader Tapajós system.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Bryconamericus pinnavittatus has been published in the sources available. Members of the genus are generally opportunistic micropredators and omnivores: gut-content studies on congeners from other South American drainages frequently record small aquatic invertebrates (insect larvae, microcrustaceans), terrestrial insects, algae, and organic detritus, in proportions that shift with season and microhabitat availability.
The dentition of B. pinnavittatus — two maxillary teeth, fewer than in most congeners — may reflect a dietary specialisation, but this has not been investigated. Given its very small maximum size (1 in SL), prey items would necessarily be minute: small zooplankton, microinvertebrates, and fine particulate organic matter are the most plausible diet components.
Mating
No mating observations for Bryconamericus pinnavittatus exist in the literature consulted. Bryconamericus species are generally presumed to be egg-scattering, open-water or plant-associated spawners without parental care, consistent with the broader Characidae pattern. Males in some congeners develop minute hooks on the anal-fin rays (a feature seen in several Bryconamericus and related genera), which may play a role in spawning contact, though whether B. pinnavittatus shares this trait has not been described.
Given the species' small size and the typical life-history strategy of small characids in productive lowland rivers, seasonal flood-pulse cues likely influence reproductive timing, with spawning coordinated with rising water levels in the Teles Pires drainage.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Bryconamericus pinnavittatus has not been documented in available sources, and the species is not known in the aquarium trade. By analogy with small Bryconamericus congeners, the species would be expected to scatter small, non-adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over substrate, with no parental attendance. Fry would require very fine initial food items given the adults' small size.
Data on clutch size, incubation period, and fry development are unavailable. Given the species' restricted range and absence from the hobby, captive-breeding techniques remain undescribed.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus pinnavittatus is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered by aquarists outside specialist ichthyological institutions. Its very small size (under 1 in SL) would in principle make it suitable for a nano or biotope aquarium replicating soft, warm Amazonian conditions, but no husbandry data are available.
For aquarists interested in related small South American characids from the Tapajós region, comparable surrogate species from the Bryconamericus complex and allied genera are occasionally available through specialist importers and biotope-fish networks. Any specimens that did enter the hobby should be regarded as potential wild-caught material from a poorly known species with a restricted range, and collection pressure should be a consideration.
Conservation
Bryconamericus pinnavittatus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its known distribution is restricted to the lower rio Teles Pires in the rio Tapajós basin of central Brazil — a drainage that has experienced significant hydrological alteration in recent decades, most notably from large-scale hydroelectric development including the Teles Pires hydroelectric complex.
Dam construction and reservoir formation in the Teles Pires basin have been associated with substantial changes to fish communities, including the displacement or reduction of small, rheophilic and benthopelagic species with limited dispersal capacity. Whether B. pinnavittatus is affected by these pressures has not been specifically evaluated. Given its small size, the relatively narrow geographic range indicated by available records, and the habitat changes occurring in the Teles Pires, a precautionary assessment would treat the species as potentially vulnerable, pending formal IUCN review.
