Bryconamericus pyahu is a small, slender characid reaching around 2 in standard length, endemic to the headwater streams of the Río Iguazú basin in the province of Misiones, Argentina. Described in 2003, it is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of low body depth, a distinctive dentition, and a bold humeral spot and lateral band. The IUCN considers the species Least Concern — it is relatively common across its range and has even colonised the reservoir formed by the Salto Caxias hydroelectric dam — yet it remains a biogeographic specialist tied to one of the most species-rich river systems in South America.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus pyahu was described by María de las Mercedes Azpelicueta, Jorge Casciotta, and Adriana Almirón in 2003, in a paper published in the Revue suisse de zoologie (volume 110, pp. 581–589). The type locality is Arroyo Tateto, in the headwaters of the Río San Antonio, Iguazú basin, Misiones, Argentina. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Bryconamericus pyahu Azpelicueta, Casciotta & Almirón, 2003.

The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a large assemblage of small, often schooling tetras distributed across Central and South America. It has been the subject of ongoing taxonomic revision, and species limits within the genus are frequently adjusted as new material becomes available. B. pyahu was recognised as distinct from closely related congeners on the basis of several diagnostic characters noted in the original description: a relatively low body depth (28.0–34.5 % of standard length), a specific dentition pattern with 3–5 cusps on the inner premaxillary row and 3 tricuspid teeth on the outer row, 3–5 maxillary teeth bearing 1–3 cusps, and 18–20 branched anal-fin rays.

The specific epithet pyahu is a word from the Guaraní language meaning 'new' — an appropriate choice for a newly described species from a region where Guaraní culture and language have deep historical roots.

Morphology

Bryconamericus pyahu is a benthopelagic freshwater fish of modest proportions, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in and a weight of around 2.36 g. The body is relatively slender, with a low body depth of 28.0–34.5 % of standard length — a character that helps separate it from deeper-bodied congeners.

The colour pattern is crisp and typical of the genus: a large, black, subcircular humeral spot sits just behind the gill cover, and a wide black lateral band runs along the midline of the body from the humeral region toward the caudal peduncle. The lateral line is well developed, with 37–39 perforated scales. Dentition is a useful diagnostic: the premaxilla carries an inner series of teeth with 3–5 cusps and an outer row of 3 tricuspid teeth, and the maxilla bears 3–5 teeth with 1–3 cusps. These characters, taken together, allow reliable separation of B. pyahu from the other Bryconamericus species known from the Iguazú system.

Habitat

Bryconamericus pyahu is endemic to the Río Iguazú basin, a major right-bank tributary of the Río Paraná draining parts of Misiones province in northeastern Argentina and the adjacent state of Paraná in southern Brazil. The species is associated with freshwater tributaries characterised by fast-flowing water and rocky substrates — the kind of clear, well-oxygenated headwater streams typical of the Misiones highland landscape.

The species has also been recorded in the reservoir created by the Salto Caxias hydroelectric dam on the Brazilian portion of the Iguaçu River, demonstrating some capacity to persist in lentic (still-water) environments created by impoundment. This flexibility likely contributes to the stable population trend noted by the IUCN. The Iguazú basin lies within one of the most biologically diverse freshwater systems in South America, and the fish fauna of its headwaters — including B. pyahu — includes numerous local endemics found nowhere else on earth.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for Bryconamericus pyahu in the wild are not detailed in the available literature. By analogy with the broader genus and the general feeding ecology of small benthopelagic characids in Neotropical streams, the species is presumed to be an omnivore taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and similar items — along with algae and organic detritus from the substrate and water column.

In the aquarium, small characids of this type generally accept good-quality flake and micro-pellet foods readily and benefit from supplemental offerings of small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and chironomid larvae to maintain condition.

Mating

No published studies on the reproductive behaviour of Bryconamericus pyahu in the wild are available in the current literature. Based on the biology of closely related small characids, the species is presumed to be a typical egg-scattering open spawner. Males in breeding condition likely display to females with fin-spreading and colour intensification, driving courtship sequences that lead to spawning among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or over gravel substrates.

As with most characids, there is no evidence of parental care. Adults are likely to consume eggs opportunistically after spawning, and the adhesive eggs — if similar to other small Bryconamericus — are probably deposited singly or in small groups among plant matter or substrate crevices.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for Bryconamericus pyahu are not documented in the hobby or scientific literature available at the time of writing. Based on the reproductive biology typical of small Neotropical characids, breeding would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with no parental care and adults removed or eggs transferred after spawning to prevent predation.

Incubation and fry-rearing conditions for similar small characids generally require soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at tropical temperatures, with first foods of infusoria or commercially prepared liquid fry food followed by freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Specific data for this species remain sparse; hobbyists working with it would be breaking new ground.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus pyahu is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade, and most aquarists are unlikely to come across it outside of specialist circles with an interest in Neotropical stream fishes. Its small size (around 2 in) and schooling nature mean it would be suited to a modest biotope aquarium representing the fast-flowing headwater streams of Misiones — a setup with subdued lighting, smooth river stones, fine gravel, and good water movement from a powerhead or internal filter.

Water parameters reflecting the subtropical streams of northeastern Argentina are appropriate: temperatures in the range of 68–79 °F, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and well-oxygenated, clean water. As a schooling fish it should be kept in groups of six or more. Its modest size and presumed peaceful temperament make it compatible with similarly sized characids and small catfishes from the same region, though tankmate data are essentially absent from the literature. This is fundamentally a fish for the dedicated specialist rather than the general community aquarist.

Conservation

Bryconamericus pyahu is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2023 based on an evaluation completed on 4 March 2021. The species is described as relatively common across its range in the Río Iguaçu basin of Argentina and Brazil, and the population trend is considered stable.

The IUCN assessment notes two principal threats: hydroelectric development and associated water management (including dams), and domestic and urban wastewater discharge. The Iguazú/Iguaçu basin has been heavily modified by large dam projects on both the Argentine and Brazilian sides of the border, and while B. pyahu has shown some ability to persist in reservoirs — it has been recorded in the Salto Caxias impoundment — ongoing development and water quality degradation remain background concerns for the endemic fauna of this basin. Its Least Concern status reflects adequate current resilience rather than an absence of pressure.
