Bryconamericus rubropictus was originally described in 1901 as Tetragonopterus rubropictus by Berg. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Bryconamericus, where it remains today. The parenthetical authority notation — (Berg, 1901) — reflects that transfer.
Modern molecular and morphological revisions have reorganised much of the old Characidae, and Bryconamericus is now placed by many authorities within the family Stevardiidae, a clade separated from the broader Characidae. Regional checklists — including the Check List of Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America — catalogue it under Stevardiidae, while FishBase and several aggregators still carry it under Characidae. The genus Bryconamericus as circumscribed is a diverse assemblage of small characins distributed across Andean piedmont river systems in South America. Morphology
