Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus singularis was formally described by Román-Valencia, Taphorn and Ruiz-C. in 2008 in the journal Animal Biodiversity and Conservation (31(1): 15–27). The type locality is the Cinaruco River in the Orinoco Basin of Venezuela. The species is placed within Bryconamericus, the largest genus of the subfamily Stevardiinae and one of the most species-rich in the Neotropical region, encompassing small schooling characids distributed from Costa Rica through most of South America east of the Andes.
The specific epithet singularis is Latin for 'singular' or 'remarkable', presumably referencing a combination of diagnostic characters that set this species apart from its congeners. Within Bryconamericus, species are typically separated by detailed meristic counts and fine morphological details rather than striking colour. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Bryconamericus singularis Román-Valencia, Taphorn & Ruiz-C., 2008.
Morphology
Bryconamericus singularis is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the typical Bryconamericus plan. A key diagnostic feature is the distinctly flat dorsal profile of the head — a character noted in the original description that helps separate it from sympatric congeners.
Meristic data from FishBase record a dorsal fin of 11–12 rays and an anal fin of 20–21 rays, both consistent with the genus. The dentition is characterised by 6–7 unicuspid teeth on the dentary, a feature used in the original description to distinguish it within the species group. A dark lateral band runs along the flank, a common but diagnostically useful element in a genus where many species share similar colouration. Five supraneural bones are recorded, another character from the original description.
Habitat
The species is known from the Cinaruco River, a blackwater tributary of the lower Orinoco in Apure state, Venezuela. The Cinaruco drains seasonally flooded savannas and gallery forest and is characterised by warm, soft, mildly acidic water with low conductivity, reflecting the sandy, nutrient-poor llanos substrate. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, suggesting it occupies the lower to mid-water column in association with the substrate.
The Cinaruco River system is notable among Orinoco tributaries for its extremely low nutrient levels and the resulting high diversity of small characids that partition resources in these low-productivity waters. Specific physicochemical data for this species' microhabitats are not available in published sources, but conditions typical of the Cinaruco include temperatures in the range of 79–86 °F, pH on the acidic side of neutral, and very soft water.
Feeding
FishBase categorises Bryconamericus singularis as an omnivore. Recorded dietary items include aquatic insects, snails, seeds, and aquatic plants — a broad, opportunistic diet representative of small-bodied Bryconamericus species in the Orinoco system, which exploit whatever invertebrates, plant material, and allochthonous inputs are available seasonally.
In the wild this feeding strategy likely shifts with the hydrological cycle, with flooded savanna providing access to terrestrial invertebrates and seeds during high water, while retreating to aquatic invertebrates and algae during the dry season when fish are concentrated in main river channels. No specific data on feeding ecology or gut content analysis are available in the accessible literature.
Mating
No published data on the mating behaviour of Bryconamericus singularis are available. By analogy with the genus and with Stevardiinae generally, the species is expected to be a non-guarding egg-scatterer. Male display behaviour in small Bryconamericus species is understudied; schooling is typical of the genus, and spawning likely occurs within loose aggregations rather than through defended territories or pair bonding.
In closely related species and in the subfamily broadly, males often show more intense colouration and slightly slimmer body proportions than females, particularly during the breeding season, though sexual dimorphism in Bryconamericus tends to be subtle and most apparent in mature adults.
Breeding
Bryconamericus singularis is presumed to be an open egg-scatterer with no parental care, as is typical for the genus and for Stevardiinae. Eggs are likely adhesive and deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over the substrate, with adults paying no further attention after spawning. There are no published accounts of successful captive breeding of this species.
Breeding seasons in the Cinaruco system are likely tied to the annual flood pulse of the Orinoco, with rising water levels and associated environmental cues triggering spawning, but no specific data on reproductive periodicity or fecundity for B. singularis are available in the literature.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus singularis is not an established aquarium fish. It does not appear in the ornamental trade under any common name, and there are no published husbandry accounts. As a small-bodied, omnivorous characid from a warm, soft, acidic blackwater system, it would in principle respond to conditions appropriate for similar Orinoco-basin tetras: warm water (79–86 °F), soft and slightly acidic conditions, good filtration, and a planted tank with subdued lighting.
Should it ever become available, its small size and likely peaceful disposition would make it suitable for a biotope-style tank reproducing the Cinaruco environment alongside other small Venezuelan characids. In the absence of husbandry data, it is best regarded as a species primarily of scientific interest at this time.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Bryconamericus singularis as Least Concern (LC) in November 2020 (published 2021), based on an evaluation by Carlos DoNascimiento, Francisco Villa-Navarro, Jose Ivan Mojica, Douglas Rodríguez-Olarte, and Donald Taphorn. The Least Concern status reflects an absence of evidence for population-level decline large enough to qualify the species under a threatened category, rather than necessarily indicating abundance or wide distribution.
The species is known only from the Cinaruco River drainage in Venezuela. While the Cinaruco system falls within or near the boundaries of Cinaruco-Capanaparo National Park, which provides some habitat protection, the species' restricted known range means that localised threats — habitat degradation, introduced species, or hydrological alteration — could affect it significantly. The 2020 assessment is the most recent data point and is considered current.
