Bryconamericus stramineus is a small, slender characin of the La Plata and São Francisco river basins in Brazil, with additional records from the Uruguay River system. Reaching roughly 4.5 in total length, it is an unassuming but ecologically familiar fish — an omnivorous schooler that navigates the warm, moderately acidic streams and rivers of interior South America in loose aggregations, feeding opportunistically on invertebrates and plant material. In Portuguese-speaking Brazil it goes by the common name 'pequira'. The species has not been assessed by the IUCN and remains understudied relative to more charismatic Neotropical characins.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus stramineus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908 on the basis of material from South America. The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a large assemblage of small, silvery South American characins that are superficially similar to one another and have historically been challenging to diagnose on morphological grounds alone. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Eigenmann, 1908 as the authority for this species.

The broader family Characidae has undergone substantial revision in recent decades, with molecular and morphological work redistributing many genera among revised or newly erected families. FishBase notes that Bryconamericus is sometimes placed in Stevardiidae following these revisionary studies; however, the family field here follows Characidae as the working classification, consistent with many regional catalogs. The genus name Bryconamericus combines reference to the genus Brycon, a group of larger characins, with the Americas, reflecting the geographic scope of the group.

Morphology

Bryconamericus stramineus is a slender, fusiform characin with a moderately compressed body typical of the genus. FishBase records a maximum total length of 4.5 in, placing it among the larger members of the genus, though most individuals encountered in the field are smaller. The body is predominantly silvery, with a faint lateral stripe running from behind the operculum toward the base of the caudal fin, as is characteristic of many small South American characins.

Like all characins, B. stramineus bears an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins — a small, fleshy, rayless lobe whose function remains debated. The fins are generally hyaline to lightly pigmented. Dentition in the genus is typically bicuspid, adapted for the mixed invertebrate and plant diet common in omnivorous characins. Sexual differences are subtle; females are generally deeper-bodied when gravid, but external dimorphism is not pronounced outside of reproductive condition.

Habitat

This species is distributed across the La Plata basin and the São Francisco River basin of Brazil, with reports from the Uruguay River system extending its range into parts of Uruguay and adjacent Argentina. These are large, lowland South American river systems characterised by warm, moderately acidic to neutral water with variable turbidity depending on the sub-basin and season.

Environmental studies have documented the species in habitats where turbidity, temperature, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen all vary considerably, suggesting a degree of physiological tolerance that is consistent with its broad geographic range in lowland South American drainages.

Males pursue and display to females during the spawning season. Spawning takes place over fine substrate or among aquatic vegetation, where adhesive eggs are scattered and left to develop without any guarding or tending by either parent. In riverine populations, seasonal peaks in reproductive activity correspond with the warmer months and periods of increased food availability.

Breeding

In captivity, Bryconamericus stramineus can be bred using the standard approach for small egg-scattering characins. A conditioned group or paired adults are placed in a breeding tank with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or a synthetic spawning mop, over which eggs are scattered during spawning activity. The adults should be removed after spawning as they offer no parental care and will consume the eggs.

Eggs hatch within a few days at typical water temperatures in the 75–79 °F range. The small fry are free-swimming shortly after hatching and require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Reproductive biology studies from Uruguay River populations confirm the egg-scattering, non-guarding pattern and provide data on fecundity and seasonal timing. In the aquarium

Bryconamericus stramineus is an active, schooling characin that does best kept in groups of six or more individuals. It is a peaceful species suited to a community aquarium with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. A tank with some open swimming space and areas of fine-leaved plant cover provides an environment that reflects the species' natural habitat in South American lowland rivers and streams.

Water conditions should be maintained in the warm, moderately soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral range: 72–79 °F, pH 5.5–7.2. Good filtration and regular water changes are more important than precise chemistry within this range. The species is not widely kept in the hobby compared to more colourful or unusual characins, but it is hardy and undemanding, making it a reasonable choice for aquarists interested in Neotropical communities or the lesser-known Bryconamericus group. Its active schooling behaviour and ease of care are its primary appeals.

Conservation

Bryconamericus stramineus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status remains Not Evaluated. The species occupies a wide distribution spanning major river systems in Brazil — the La Plata and São Francisco basins — as well as the Uruguay River, which reduces the likelihood of it being immediately threatened at the species level, though no formal assessment has been conducted.

The lowland river systems it inhabits face ongoing pressure from agricultural runoff, dam construction, water extraction, and habitat modification throughout its range in South America. These are broad-scale pressures affecting many Neotropical freshwater fish, and a formal assessment would be required to determine whether any of these factors are affecting B. stramineus populations at a scale that would warrant listing. Until such an assessment is conducted, the species must be regarded as data-sparse from a conservation standpoint.
