Bryconamericus subtilisform was described by Román-Valencia in 2003 from material collected in the Río Caroni basin of Venezuela, with additional paratypes from the Río Icabarú, a tributary draining highland areas of the Guiana Shield into the Caroni system and ultimately into the Orinoco. The original description placed the species alongside related Venezuelan congeners including Bryconamericus cinarucoense and Bryconamericus singularis, all drawn from Orinoco Basin drainages.
The valid name, as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Bryconamericus subtilisform Román-Valencia, 2003. The genus Bryconamericus is placed within the family Characidae in the broad sense; some recent classifications assign it to the subfamily Diapominae within Stevardiidae, a grouping split from Characidae. Morphology
