Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus sylvicola was described by Jorge Braga in 1998 from holotype MACN 8072, a 2.5 in standard-length specimen collected at a central stream (25°50′S, 54°10′W) that is a tributary of the Urugua-í River in Misiones, Argentina. The valid name is confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Bryconamericus sylvicola Braga, 1998. WoRMS likewise records it as an accepted species, with the genus Bryconamericus authored by Eigenmann, 1907.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae (family Characidae), a diverse group of small characins distributed broadly across South America. Older literature placed the group under Characidae incertae sedis; more recent molecular work assigns it to Stevardiidae, sometimes treated as a full family. The top-level family field here follows the CLAUDE.md editorial convention of recording 'Characidae' as the family, which is the inclusive placement most reference works recognise.
The specific epithet sylvicola is Latin for 'woodland-dweller' or 'forest-inhabiting', an allusion to the dense Atlantic Forest habitat that characterises the streams where the species was collected.
Morphology
Bryconamericus sylvicola reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in for unsexed adults, making it a small, slender characin typical of the genus. The body is fusiform and moderately compressed laterally, suited to life in fast currents over stony substrates.
Distinguishing characters given by Braga in the original description include: an irregular series of tricuspid teeth on the outer premaxillary row; 16–19 branched anal fin rays; 37–40 perforated scales along the lateral line; a wide silvery lateral band running from the opercle to the base of the caudal fin; and a vertically elongated humeral spot situated just behind the opercle. The combination of the high anal fin ray count, the well-defined humeral spot, and the broad lateral band separates it from other Bryconamericus occurring in the region.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Argentina, known from Misiones province, and is recorded from the upper and middle Urugua-í river system, the Cuñá Pirú basin, and various other small streams draining the Misiones highlands into the Paraná. The IUCN estimates an extent of occurrence of 19,438 mi² and an area of occupancy of 9,17 mi², with only eight known locations — a distribution characteristic of a locally endemic stream specialist.
Bryconamericus sylvicola inhabits small river systems with clear water, stony or rocky substrate, and fast current — the type of oxygen-rich, well-shaded stream associated with intact Atlantic Forest cover. Average temperatures in the region range from approximately 56 °F (56 °F) in winter to 74 °F (74 °F) in summer, with annual rainfall of 1,900–2,0.5 in supplying perennial flow. Although first thought to be confined to reaches above a natural waterfall barrier in the upper Urugua-í, the species has since been found in lower reaches and in the artificial lake formed by the Urugua-í dam (completed 1989), suggesting some capacity to persist in modified habitats.
Feeding
Bryconamericus sylvicola is a small omnivorous characin. Detailed diet studies in the wild are not available in the published record for this species, but members of the genus are generally opportunistic feeders in the water column and near the substrate, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans — as well as algae and organic detritus depending on what is locally available.
The rocky, fast-flowing streams it favours typically support productive benthic invertebrate communities, and the fish's dentition — tricuspid outer teeth — is consistent with cropping invertebrates and plant material from hard surfaces. Aquarium husbandry data for the species is sparse in the hobby literature.
Mating
No published breeding observations specific to Bryconamericus sylvicola are available in the hobby or scientific literature. Based on general Bryconamericus and Stevardiinae biology, the species is presumed to be an open egg-scatterer that spawns without parental care. Males and females in the genus are typically distinguished by body size and fullness, with females appearing more robust in breeding condition.
Mating behaviour in related small Bryconamericus is driven by opportunistic pairing rather than prolonged courtship rituals. Spawning likely occurs in areas with fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or among submerged root masses, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs can settle away from the current.
Breeding
Bryconamericus sylvicola has not been established in the ornamental aquarium trade and detailed captive breeding records are absent from the literature. By analogy with other small Stevardiinae, breeding would be expected to occur via egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning substrate, with no parental care; adults in a community setting would likely consume eggs unless removed.
The cool-water seasonality of the Misiones highland streams — where temperatures dip to the mid-teens Celsius in winter — suggests that a seasonal drop in temperature may act as a spawning trigger in the wild, as is common among subtropical stream characins.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus sylvicola is not a species available in the mainstream aquarium trade. It is a specialist stream fish from a subtropical climate, and the absence of captive breeding programmes means it is essentially unknown to hobbyists outside of scientific institutions. Were it to become available, its care requirements would likely parallel those of other small, cool-water South American stream characins: well-oxygenated water with moderate to brisk flow, temperatures in the range of 59–72 °F (59–72 °F), a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and a fine gravel or pebble substrate.
As a small schooling species, groups would be appropriate. Its diminutive size (to 2.5 in SL) and presumed peaceful temperament would make it compatible with similarly sized fish from similar biotopes, but no aquarium husbandry data have been published for this species.
Conservation
Bryconamericus sylvicola is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), based on an assessment published in 2022 (assessed 30 September 2020) by Liotta and Fuchs. The listing rests on the small extent of occurrence (19,438 mi²), fewer than ten known locations, and inferred continuing decline in habitat quality. Population trend is listed as unknown.
Threats documented by the IUCN include agricultural land-use change leading to stream sedimentation and turbidity, dam construction — most significantly the Urugua-í dam completed in 1989, which altered discharge and thermal regimes in the lower river — and the introduction of non-native fishes, particularly Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Tilapia (Coptodon rendalli), which compete with and disturb native stream communities. Deforestation in the Atlantic Forest of Misiones, one of the most biodiverse and most threatened forest blocks in South America, compounds all of these pressures by degrading the riparian cover and water quality on which clear-water stream endemics depend. No specific conservation measures targeted at this species are recorded.
