Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus terrabensis was described by Seth Eugene Meek in 1914, based on material from the Térraba (Río Grande de Térraba) drainage of Costa Rica — the type locality encoded in the specific epithet. The species was revisited and redescribed by Román-Valencia in 2002, who examined fresh material from Central America including Panama and confirmed the valid name as Bryconamericus terrabensis Meek, 1914, placing it among five valid Bryconamericus species known from the Central American isthmus.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within the large family Characidae. It is the most diverse genus in that subfamily, comprising more than 60 valid species distributed across both Cis- and Trans-Andean drainages from Panama to northern Argentina. Some taxonomic literature has referenced the group within a broader Stevardiidae framework, but Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the governing authority for valid fish names, treats Stevardiinae as a subfamily of Characidae — the placement followed here. Within Central America, B. terrabensis is one of a small endemic cluster; it shares portions of its range with other characids including Hyphessobrycon savagei and Pseudocheirodon terrabae in the Chiriquí ecoregion.
Morphology
Bryconamericus terrabensis is a slender, fusiform characid reaching a maximum recorded total length of 3.5 in, typical of the genus's small-to-medium body plan. Like other stevardiin characids it has the family's characteristic adipose fin, a deeply forked caudal fin, and a relatively streamlined build suited to life in moderate- to high-current streams.
Published morphological detail for this species beyond size and general body form is sparse in accessible sources. The genus as a whole tends toward silvery or translucent lateral coloration with a dark lateral stripe or band, a pattern consistent with other rheophilic small characids adapted to clear, fast-moving water. Sexual dimorphism within Bryconamericus is generally subtle, with females typically appearing deeper-bodied when ripe, but species-specific data for B. terrabensis are not documented in available sources.
Habitat
Bryconamericus terrabensis inhabits freshwater creeks and brooks with moderate to high current velocity in Costa Rica, with records also from Panama. It is found across an elevation range of approximately 60 to 940 metres, indicating tolerance of both lowland and submontane stream conditions. The species is benthopelagic, occupying the mid-water and lower water column of flowing habitats.
The Chiriquí freshwater ecoregion (FEOW ecoregion 206), which spans the Pacific-slope drainages straddling the Costa Rica–Panama border, is the documented range of the species. Streams in this region tend to be clear, well-oxygenated, and relatively cool given their elevation, with moderate mineral content from volcanic and sedimentary catchments. B. terrabensis shares its habitat with a small community of regional endemic characids adapted to similar lotic conditions. Water temperatures in the tropical range of 72–81 °F are recorded for the species by FishBase.
Feeding
Bryconamericus terrabensis feeds on seeds, vegetable matter, and insects — a diet typical of small generalist characids in montane Central American streams. This omnivorous habit reflects the varied resource base available in fast-flowing tropical streams, where terrestrial inputs (fallen insects, seeds, and plant debris) supplement the benthic and aquatic invertebrate prey available in the current.
The genus Bryconamericus broadly exhibits opportunistic feeding behaviour, shifting between plant material and animal prey depending on seasonal availability. In clear, rheophilic streams like those of the Chiriquí region, insect drift — both aquatic larvae and terrestrial insects that fall onto the surface — likely represents an important food source alongside algae and organic detritus scraped from submerged substrates.
Mating
No published observations of wild mating behaviour are available for Bryconamericus terrabensis specifically. By analogy with the genus and subfamily, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care, consistent with the reproductive strategy widespread among small characids of South and Central American streams.
Males of small rheophilic characids in this group typically engage in brief spawning chases alongside or upstream of females, with eggs and sperm released simultaneously in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation and deposited adhesively or left to drift with the current. No courtship structures, nesting behaviour, or long-term pair bonding are known for any Bryconamericus species.
Breeding
Captive breeding records for Bryconamericus terrabensis are not documented in available sources, and the species is not currently cultivated in the ornamental fish trade. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus and subfamily, breeding would be expected to follow the egg-scattering model standard for small characids: adults scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over substrate without guarding them, and the eggs develop without parental assistance.
For any aquarist who obtained wild-caught specimens, a well-planted tank with fine-leaved vegetation, moderate current, and slightly cooler, well-oxygenated water would replicate the stream conditions of the natural habitat. Eggs and early fry of similarly sized characids typically require small live foods — infusoria, rotifers, or micro-worms — before transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given how rarely the species appears in captivity, no husbandry record exists to refine these generalizations.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus terrabensis is not established in the ornamental fish hobby and is essentially unavailable in the trade. It appears in the aquarium literature only incidentally, in the context of Central American characid diversity or stream ecology. Any specimens in captivity would almost certainly be wild-caught research animals rather than purpose-kept aquarium fish.
Should the species become available, its requirements would logically follow the needs of other rheophilic montane characids: clean, well-oxygenated water with good flow, a temperature in the 72–79 °F range, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrates supplemented with plant-based foods. A species tank or a community of similarly sized, active characids from comparable habitats would suit it best. Its modest size (to about 3.5 in) and expected peaceful disposition would make it manageable for an experienced aquarist with the right setup, though the near-complete absence of husbandry data means any keeper would be working largely from first principles.
Conservation
Bryconamericus terrabensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status as of this writing. The species is not evaluated (NE), meaning its population trend, range size, and threat level have not been formally analysed under IUCN criteria.
The Chiriquí freshwater ecoregion that the species inhabits is under pressure from agricultural expansion, sedimentation, water abstraction, and the degradation of riparian corridors — threats common to montane Central American stream systems. As a range-restricted endemic confined to Pacific-slope drainages of the Costa Rica–Panama border region, B. terrabensis could be vulnerable to localised habitat loss even if individual populations remain locally common. Formal survey work to document population status and range limits would be a prerequisite for any future IUCN assessment.
