Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus tolimae was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) treats Bryconamericus tolimae Eigenmann, 1913 as the valid name. The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae in the order Characiformes, though FishBase has at times listed the genus under the subfamilial arrangement Stevardiidae; the valid family placement recognised here is Characidae.
A significant contribution to understanding the species came from Román-Valencia and colleagues (2008), who published a redescription of B. tolimae alongside a revised identification key for all Colombian Bryconamericus species in the Revista de Biología Tropical. That work clarified the species' diagnostic characters and its distinction from congeners sharing the Magdalena drainage. Bryconamericus is a diverse Neotropical genus of small characids distributed across the drainages of South America; within Colombia the genus includes multiple species, several of which overlap in the Magdalena basin, making an accurate identification key essential for field workers.
Morphology
Bryconamericus tolimae is a slender, fusiform characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in. Like other members of the genus it shows the typical characid body plan: a compressed, moderately elongate profile, a forked tail, an adipose fin behind the rayed dorsal, and a complete lateral line. The coloration is not elaborately described in available sources; small Bryconamericus species are generally silvery with a more-or-less distinct lateral stripe or band, and the name pintona (roughly 'spotted' or 'dappled' in Colombian vernacular) may allude to some patterning in life.
Data on meristic and morphometric characters specific to B. tolimae are detailed in the Román-Valencia et al. (2008) redescription but lie beyond the scope of what can be summarised here without access to that paper's full measurements. The species is distinguished from its Colombian congeners by the combination of characters set out in that identification key.
Habitat
The species is known exclusively from the upper Magdalena River basin, confined to the Tolima region of Colombia. The IUCN assessment documents its presence in six to nine locations: the rivers Coello, Cocora, Combeima, and Opia, and the creeks Cuinde Negro, Cuinde Blanco, Cuinde Feo, Gualanday, and Cay. The type locality is a tributary of the Combeima River near Ibagué, vereda Pastales (approximately 4°30'19"N, 75°17'46"W). The estimated extent of occurrence is around 16,78 mi².
Within those rivers the species favours ponds and backwaters with sandy substrates, strong flow, and high dissolved oxygen. Submerged vegetation is scarce in the occupied habitats, but riparian vegetation lines the banks. These are clear, fast-draining Andean headwater systems fed by the slopes of the Central Cordillera, and the fish appears adapted to the well-oxygenated, relatively cool conditions of mid-elevation Andean streams rather than the lowland Magdalena main channel. Population density is noted as low — the species is neither frequent nor abundant at known sites.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of 2.5 for B. tolimae, placing it among the lower trophic ranks typical of small omnivorous or detritivorous characids. Bryconamericus species generally feed on a mixture of small invertebrates, algae, plant matter, and organic detritus gleaned from the substrate and water column; the sandy-bottomed, fast-flowing habitats occupied by B. tolimae would offer drifting aquatic insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, and periphyton scraped from rocks and submerged wood.
No detailed dietary study specific to B. tolimae has been located in available sources. Observations from the aquarium trade, where the species is essentially absent, are likewise lacking. Any aquarist keeping this fish should treat it as a generalist omnivore and offer a varied diet of small prepared foods alongside live or frozen invertebrates.
Mating
No detailed study of courtship or mating behaviour in B. tolimae has been published in sources available for this profile. Members of Bryconamericus are egg-scattering characids that broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, submerged roots, and other bottom structures without forming pair bonds. Spawning in small Neotropical characids typically coincides with rising water levels and warmer temperatures in the wet season, which may flush nutrients into the system and signal spawning readiness.
Male competition and any associated colour changes or fin displays in this species are undocumented. Given how rarely B. tolimae appears in the aquarium trade — it is a small, drab-to-the-eye stream fish from a restricted Colombian watershed, not a traded ornamental — hobbyist observations are essentially nonexistent.
Breeding
Bryconamericus tolimae has not been deliberately bred in the aquarium hobby and no captive-breeding accounts are known. By analogy with Bryconamericus and related small characids, the reproductive mode is almost certainly open egg-scattering: adults scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or bottom debris, after which they provide no parental care and may consume the eggs if not removed.
The IUCN notes that no utilisation of the species is recorded — it is not collected for food or trade — so there is no commercial breeding incentive. Population size and reproductive output in the wild are unstudied, which the IUCN flags as a research need alongside distribution and trend data. The species' rarity in the hobby means that if captive husbandry is ever attempted, basic parameters such as temperature thresholds, clutch size, incubation time, and fry diet will need to be established empirically.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus tolimae is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense: it is not available in trade, is not bred in captivity, and is endemic to a threatened Andean watershed in Colombia. Any captive care notes must therefore be extrapolated from the habitat data and from what is known about Bryconamericus and comparable small Andean characids.
The species' natural habitats — swift, well-oxygenated, sandy-bottomed Andean rivers — suggest it would require strongly filtered, oxygen-rich water with moderate to high flow, relatively cool temperatures for a tropical fish (the elevation of these rivers implies conditions cooler than lowland Amazon habitats), and a substrate of fine sand. A spacious tank with open swimming lanes and minimal decoration beyond fine-leaved plants and a sandy base would approximate its natural surroundings. It should be kept in a school, as is standard for characids. Because this species carries a Vulnerable IUCN assessment and the wild population is small and stressed, any hobbyist obtaining specimens should treat them with corresponding care, source them from legal channels only, and not contribute to collection pressure on the wild population.
Conservation
Bryconamericus tolimae is assessed as Vulnerable (VU B1ab(iii)) on the IUCN Red List, assessed 8 October 2014 and published 2016. The criterion reflects a restricted extent of occurrence (approximately 16,78 mi²), presence at six to nine locations, and continuing decline in habitat quality. The threats driving that decline are agricultural in origin: application of agrochemicals (pesticides and fertilisers from coffee plantations), deforestation of riparian and watershed vegetation, and the consequent erosion and sedimentation of the stream beds that the species depends on. The shift of the Tolima slopes to coffee agriculture has accelerated both chemical inputs and soil loss into the drainages.
The species is not exploited commercially for food or the aquarium trade, so direct harvest is not a pressure. However, the IUCN notes that the population trend is unknown and that research is needed on its distribution extent, population size, trends, and the relative severity of threats. Because B. tolimae occupies only a handful of rivers in a single Colombian department, any local deterioration is magnified — there is no fallback population elsewhere in its range. Protecting riparian forest, reducing agrochemical runoff into the Combeima, Coello, and related drainages, and conducting systematic field surveys to establish baseline population data are the most pressing conservation actions identified.
