Bryconamericus uporas is a small characid, reaching barely 2 in standard length, that inhabits the fast-flowing, rocky headwater streams of the upper and middle Rio Uruguay basin on the border of Argentina and Brazil. Described in 2002 from the Misiones Province of Argentina, it is one of a guild of endemic small characins that partition resources in the subtropical rivers of the upper Uruguay system. Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus uporas was formally described by Jorge Casciotta, Mercedes Azpelicueta, and Amalia Almirón in 2002, with the original description published in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie (volume 109, issue 1, pages 155–165). The type locality is the upper Rio Uruguay basin of Argentina. The species diagnosis rested on a combination of pigmentary, meristic, and morphometric characters that distinguish it from its congeners within Bryconamericus.

The valid name Bryconamericus uporas Casciotta, Azpelicueta & Almirón, 2002 is confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS), the primary authority for valid nomenclature. Bryconamericus is a large and speciose genus of small South American characids in the family Characidae. FishBase has at times placed the species in Stevardiinae (Stevardiidae), reflecting ongoing reclassification within the broader characid radiation, but the top-level family placement recognized here is Characidae. The species epithet "uporas" does not appear to be a widely glossed toponym or patronym in the available literature, and its etymology remains unresolved in the cached sources.

Morphology

Bryconamericus uporas is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in.
