Bryconamericus yokiae was described by César Román-Valencia in 2003. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Bryconamericus yokiae Román-Valencia, 2003. The type locality is the Río Salado in Venezuela, and the species has not been recorded beyond this drainage.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the large and taxonomically complex family Characidae. Some recent revisions have proposed placing Bryconamericus and related genera within the subfamily Stevardiinae (sometimes elevated as the family Stevardiidae), though Catalog of Fishes continues to treat these taxa within the broader Characidae framework. The genus is widespread across South America, reaching its greatest diversity in Andean foothill rivers, and is distinguished from close relatives by a suite of osteological characters including features of the rhinosphenoid and orbitosphenoid.
The species epithet honours Yoki Román-Valencia, the wife of the describing author — making it a patronym in the feminine form.
