Bryconamericus ytu is a small characid endemic to a single tributary of the río Uruguay drainage in Misiones province, Argentina — a stream so restricted in range that the species has been assessed as Endangered by the IUCN. Collected from rapids, small waterfalls, and clear flowing pools over sand and stones, it belongs to the genus Bryconamericus, the most speciose group of small characids in South America and a taxonomically active one. Its confinement to one stream system makes it one of the most geographically restricted freshwater fishes in the southern cone.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus ytu was described by Almirón, Azpelicueta and Casciotta in 2004, with the original description published in Zoologische Abhandlungen (Dresden) volume 54, pages 3–10. The type locality is arroyo Shangay (27°29'S, 54°40'W), a tributary of the río Uruguay, in Misiones province, northeastern Argentina. The holotype is MACN-Ict 8670, a 2 in SL male.

The species is placed in Bryconamericus Eigenmann, a large and ecologically diverse genus of small to medium-sized characids distributed from Central America south to the Sauce Grande basin in Buenos Aires province. A comprehensive systematic study of Argentine Bryconamericus (Fuchs 2014) confirmed eleven species from Argentina, of which B. ytu is among the most narrowly distributed. The genus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within family Characidae, a grouping supported by multiple molecular and morphological analyses. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Bryconamericus ytu Almirón, Azpelicueta & Casciotta, 2004.

Morphology

Bryconamericus ytu is a small, slender characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, though most individuals are smaller. The body form is typical of the genus: fusiform, laterally somewhat compressed, with a relatively large eye, a small terminal mouth, and the adipose fin that marks all characids. Coloration in life is silvery with a narrow dark lateral stripe running from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, as is common throughout Bryconamericus.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data distinguishing B. ytu from its congeners are given in the original description. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; the holotype was a male of 2 in SL, and females are likely similar in general appearance, a pattern consistent with the rest of the genus. Data on live coloration in the field are sparse.

Habitat

The entire known range of Bryconamericus ytu is arroyo Shangay, a tributary of the río Uruguay in Misiones province, Argentina. Within that stream the species occupies a variety of microhabitats: rapids, small waterfalls, and clear flowing water, as well as pools and areas of slower current. Substrate consists of sand and stones. Observed depth range is 1–4 ft, reflecting shallow headwater and mid-stream conditions typical of small Misiones streams.

The Misiones drainage system sits within the Atlantic Forest ecoregion, one of the most biodiverse and most threatened terrestrial biomes in South America. Stream water in this region is typically clear, well-oxygenated, and circumneutral. The arroyo Shangay catchment is small, and any disturbance to its hydrology, water quality, or surrounding riparian forest has a disproportionate effect on the entire wild population of B. ytu.

Feeding

Specific dietary studies for Bryconamericus ytu are not available in the published record cached for this account. The genus Bryconamericus is broadly omnivorous: small to medium species typically consume aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, algae, detritus, and microcrustaceans in proportion to their local availability. In clear, fast-flowing Misiones streams the diet is likely dominated by drift invertebrates and benthic prey taken from sandy or stony substrates.

In the aquarium, members of the genus generally accept high-quality flake and small pellet foods, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Variety in diet supports better condition and natural colouration in captive specimens.

Mating

No dedicated mating or reproductive behavior studies for Bryconamericus ytu have been published. As a member of Bryconamericus and of the broader characid clade, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care — the ancestral reproductive mode for Characidae. Males in breeding condition in related species may show subtle colour intensification or body swelling differences relative to females, though strong sexual dimorphism in coloration is not typical in small Bryconamericus.

Given the species' rapid and waterfall habitat, courtship and spawning likely occur in flowing-water settings. Adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or fibrous benthic material would provide some anchorage in current. These details remain undocumented for this species specifically.

Breeding

Bryconamericus ytu has been bred at the Breeding Centre for Endangered Fish, indicating that captive propagation is feasible and that the species is not unusually difficult to reproduce in a controlled setting. This record, noted by SHOAL Conservation, is significant for a species with so restricted a wild range: ex-situ breeding capacity provides a buffer against complete population loss.

Detailed breeding protocols are not publicly documented. Based on congeners, the species likely spawns over fine substrate or plant matter, scattering small, non-adhesive or mildly adhesive eggs that receive no parental attention. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Incubation times and fry-rearing requirements have not been published in accessible sources, and hobbyist accounts are absent. The existence of a captive breeding record at a conservation facility suggests these technical hurdles are manageable.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus ytu is essentially absent from the mainstream ornamental-fish trade and is not currently available through normal commercial channels. Its aquarium relevance is primarily conservation-driven: the species is held and bred at specialist facilities, and any hobbyist working with it is likely doing so through conservation or research partnerships rather than pet-store purchase.

Care requirements can be inferred from its wild habitat. A well-oxygenated aquarium with moderate to good current, clear water, and a substrate of sand and smooth stones would approximate its natural stream environment. Temperature should fall within the subtropical range appropriate to Misiones (roughly 64–79 °F). As a small schooling characid, it would benefit from being kept in a group. Good water quality and a varied diet of small live, frozen, and prepared foods are the baseline for maintaining condition. If future conservation breeding programmes release surplus stock to specialist hobbyists, experience with related Bryconamericus species in the hobby suggests it would not present unusual difficulties.

Conservation

Bryconamericus ytu is assessed as Endangered (EN) under IUCN criterion B2ab(iii), assessed 19 November 2020 (IUCN Red List version 2025-2). The EN listing is driven by the species' extremely small area of occupancy — a single stream, arroyo Shangay, in Misiones, Argentina — combined with inferred continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. A species confined to one small stream catchment is acutely vulnerable to any land-use change, water extraction, pollution event, or hydrological alteration in that catchment; there is no rescue population elsewhere.

B. ytu appears on the SHOAL Conservation priority fish list and has been captive-bred at the Breeding Centre for Endangered Fish, placing it among the small number of freshwater fishes receiving active ex-situ attention. The Atlantic Forest of Misiones is itself a biodiversity hotspot under intense pressure from agriculture, logging, and infrastructure development. Protecting the arroyo Shangay watershed and its riparian forest cover is the primary in-situ conservation need for this species. It is not listed on CITES.
