Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus zamorensis was formally described by César Román-Valencia, Ricardo Ruiz-C., Donald C. Taphorn B., and Amado García-A. in 2013, in a paper published in Animal Biodiversity and Conservation 36(1): 123–139 that erected three new Bryconamericus species and provided identification keys for the genus in Ecuador alongside a discussion of the validity of the related genus Knodus. The type locality is the Zamora River drainage in Zamora Chinchipe province, Ecuador, within the upper Amazon basin. The holotype measures 2 in standard length, and the type series includes 126 paratypes ranging from 1.5–2.5 in SL.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the large, speciose family Characidae — the true characins — within the order Characiformes. FishBase places B. zamorensis in the subfamily Stevardiidae (sometimes treated as a separate family), reflecting ongoing revisions of characid higher classification. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name; the combination Bryconamericus zamorensis Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., Taphorn B. & García-A., 2013 stands unchallenged as of this writing.
The species is diagnosed from congeners primarily by a suite of meristic and morphometric characters: five teeth on the maxilla (versus one to two in most relatives), a reticulated pigment pattern overlying the lateral stripe, a relatively high branched anal-fin ray count of 25–28, and a low branched dorsal-fin ray count of ten. Lateral-line scale counts run 33–37 and the dorsal fin formula is ii,7,i; the anal fin iii,22–25.
Morphology
Bryconamericus zamorensis is a small, fusiform characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. Like other members of the genus it is moderately compressed, with a fairly slender body, a small terminal mouth, and the adipose fin characteristic of characids placed behind the dorsal and before the caudal. The maxilla carries five teeth — a diagnostic character that sets it apart from most congeners — and the dentition is otherwise typical of an omnivorous streamlined char.
The colour pattern includes a reticulated or net-like overlay on the lateral stripe — described in the original diagnosis as a reticulated pattern over the lateral stripe — which gives the flanks a slightly speckled or scaled-pattern appearance in preservative and is presumably visible in life as a darkened scale-margin pattern on a silvery ground colour. The species shows the typical characid silvery flank with a more or less distinct horizontal lateral band running toward the caudal peduncle. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail for this species; size and meristic data from the type series suggest both sexes are represented among the paratypes, with the mean paratype SL at approximately 2 in.
Habitat
Bryconamericus zamorensis is known from the Zamora River drainage in Zamora Chinchipe province, Ecuador — a river system that drains the eastern Andean slopes and foothills of southern Ecuador and flows northeast to join the Marañón, the major headwater tributary of the Amazon proper. The species is accordingly an Andean foothill and cis-Andean lowland fish of the upper Amazon basin, occupying a region of high endemism where the Andes give way to the western Amazon.
The Zamora River and its tributaries in this region are clear to slightly turbid, warm, and comparatively well oxygenated; the catchment sits in tropical cloud-forest and lower montane rainforest transition zones at relatively low elevation. FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, consistent with the broad ecology of small Bryconamericus — typically shoaling in mid-water to near-bottom in streams and small rivers with moderate to gentle flow. The IUCN notes that populations occur in headwater tributaries with minimal direct fishing pressure, which is consistent with a remote Andean foothill catchment.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Bryconamericus zamorensis has been published, but feeding ecology can be inferred from the genus. Bryconamericus species are broadly omnivorous opportunists, consuming terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, mites, and adult insects that fall to the water surface — together with algae, detritus, and plant fragments. The small, multi-cusped maxillary dentition of B. zamorensis is consistent with this generalist diet.
In the aquarium, analogous small Bryconamericus and closely related genera accept a wide range of foods without difficulty: quality flake and micro-pellets, frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and chironomid larvae. A varied diet that includes a live or frozen component is advisable both to maintain condition and to stimulate natural foraging behaviour in shoaling species of this kind.
Mating
No specific observations on courtship behaviour in Bryconamericus zamorensis have been published. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus and the broader characid clade, the species is presumed to be a typical egg-scattering, open-water or substrate spawner with no parental care. Males of small characids commonly pursue females during spawning events, and fertilisation is external with eggs scattered freely or deposited adhesively among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation and bottom substrates.
In related species and genera, spawning is often triggered or intensified by a temperature drop or water change simulating a rain event, and by improved feeding with live or frozen foods in the weeks preceding spawning. Shoaling species in this group tend to spawn as a group rather than as isolated pairs, and maintaining a small school is likely a prerequisite for natural spawning behaviour.
Breeding
Bryconamericus zamorensis has not been bred in the aquarium hobby under documented conditions, reflecting its rarity in captive collections. By analogy with congeneric and allied small characids, breeding would proceed as egg-scattering open spawning: adults scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over soft substrate, after which the adults should be removed to prevent predation of the spawn. Incubation at tropical temperatures is typically brief — a few days to a week — with fry initially hanging near the surface and requiring infusoria or comparable micro-foods before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp.
No clutch-size data, incubation period, or specific temperature preferences for breeding have been recorded for B. zamorensis. The species' Andean foothill origin suggests that it tolerates or may even require a modest temperature range rather than constant high warmth, but detailed captive-breeding notes await experimentation by hobbyists who obtain the fish.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus zamorensis is essentially absent from the mainstream ornamental fish trade and is not likely to be encountered by the average aquarist. It was described from wild-collected specimens and has not been established in captive culture to any known degree. Should the species become available, its care would follow the template of other small, peaceful, schooling South American characids: a well-filtered aquarium of at least 23.5–31.5 in in length, soft to moderately hard water in the neutral-to-slightly-acidic range, temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius consistent with its Andean foothill origin, and a school of six or more individuals to allow natural shoaling behaviour.
The species' small size and presumed peaceful disposition would make it compatible with other similarly sized Neotropical tetras, small corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. A planted tank with some open swimming space and gentle filtration would reflect its native stream environment. At present, interest in the species is primarily scientific, and any aquarium specimens would most likely derive from field collection or specialist breeders working with undescribed or newly described Bryconamericus material.
Conservation
Bryconamericus zamorensis was assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern (LC) in October 2014. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence in headwater tributaries of the Zamora River drainage where direct fishing pressure is minimal and the habitat remains comparatively intact. The Amazon headwaters of southern Ecuador, while subject to deforestation and agricultural expansion in parts of the Zamora Chinchipe province, still retain substantial areas of intact forest in the higher reaches of the catchment.
The WWF has highlighted the Ecuadorian Amazon tributaries as a zone of significant biodiversity and recent species discovery, with B. zamorensis cited as one of several new fish species described from the region in the period around 2013–2015. The Least Concern status should be understood in the context of a newly described species assessed at an early stage — population size, trend, and habitat trajectory are not fully documented — but the available evidence at the time of assessment indicated no immediate threat to the species. Continued monitoring of the Zamora Chinchipe catchment, particularly in light of road expansion and extractive industries active in parts of Ecuadorian Amazonia, remains relevant.
