Bryconamericus zeteki was described by Samuel F. Hildebrand in 1938, with the type locality given as El Valle on the Pacific slope of Panama. The original description was published in a catalogue of the freshwater fishes of the region. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Bryconamericus zeteki Hildebrand, 1938 as a valid species within Bryconamericus.
Bryconamericus is a large, species-rich genus of small characids distributed across Central and South America. It belongs to the family Characidae, the most diverse family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics. Lima et al. (2003), in the landmark checklist of freshwater fishes of South and Central America, listed Bryconamericus among the genera of uncertain placement within Characidae — a reflection of the complex phylogenetic history of the family rather than any doubt about the species itself.
The genus name Bryconamericus combines the Greek bryko, meaning 'to bite' or 'to gnaw', with a reference to the Americas, alluding to the genus's relation to the larger predatory genus Brycon and its New World range. The specific epithet zeteki honours Professor James Zetek (1886–1959), an American entomologist who worked in Panama and contributed substantially to the natural history of the Canal Zone region.
Morphology
