Moenkhausia lepidura was described by Wilhelm Ahl in 1931, placing it among the earlier-described members of the genus. The authority is rendered in parentheses — (Ahl, 1931) — in the standard fashion indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus before being reassigned to Moenkhausia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) confirms the valid name as Moenkhausia lepidura (Ahl, 1931), and recognises Moenkhausia as a valid genus within the family Characidae.
Moenkhausia is a large neotropical characid genus with roughly sixty valid species distributed widely across South America, from the Guiana Shield and upper Amazon basin south into Paraguay drainage systems. The genus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae sensu lato under some treatments, though the higher-level systematics of the family Characidae remain actively debated. Moenkhausia lepidura sits among the smaller, earlier-described species of the genus and is associated with upper Amazon basin collections typical of early-twentieth-century German ichthyological expeditions. The name Moenkhausia hildae is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Moenkhausia lepidura is a small tetra, reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length. The body is notably transparent, giving the flanks a glassy or silvery cast typical of small characins adapted to clear upland waters. A faint midline stripe runs along the body, visible under good lighting conditions, though it is less bold than the prominent lateral bands seen in some congeners.
Like other moenkhausiins, the species is moderately elongated and laterally compressed, with the rounded profile and adipose fin characteristic of the characid family. Habitat
Moenkhausia lepidura is native to South America and is associated with the upper Amazon basin. Moenkhausia lepidura is a peaceful, schooling tetra well suited to a community aquarium alongside other small, non-aggressive fish. In a proper school the fish are active mid-water swimmers that display the characteristic transparent-bodied shimmer of the species to good effect.

Good filtration with gentle to moderate flow suits the species, along with a planted layout that provides some cover without blocking open swimming lanes.
