Taxonomy & naming
Pyrrhulina vittata was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1912. The type material was collected from the vicinity of Óbidos on the lower Amazon in Brazil, establishing the species' broad Amazonian range. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Pyrrhulina vittata Regan, 1912 as the valid name; the species is placed within the family Lebiasinidae, subfamily Pyrrhulininae, which encompasses the pencil-fishes and their closest relatives.
Pyrrhulina is the largest genus in the Pyrrhulininae and comprises roughly two dozen small, surface-oriented or midwater species distributed across tropical South America. All share a characteristic upturned mouth well suited to taking prey from near the water surface. The genus is distinguished from its sister group Copeina by its broader range and typically more boldly marked flanks. Within Pyrrhulina, vittata belongs to a group of species characterised by a distinct lateral stripe or banding pattern, from which the specific epithet is derived.
Morphology
A fully grown Pyrrhulina vittata reaches approximately 1.5 in standard length, making it one of the smaller members of the genus. The body plan is slender and elongate, typical of the family: a slightly flattened dorsal profile, a distinctly upturned mouth positioned at the very tip of the snout, and a forked caudal fin. Coloration is warm brownish to tan along the back, fading to a pale or silvery belly, with a bold dark lateral stripe running from behind the eye to the caudal peduncle — the vittata (banded) marking from which the species takes its name.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle outside breeding condition. Males are typically slightly slimmer overall, and during courtship and spawning both sexes may intensify their base coloration. Females in ripe condition are visibly fuller-bodied when viewed from above. The small size of the species means that detailed counts of fin rays and scales are the most reliable means of distinguishing vittata from closely related congeners.
Habitat
Pyrrhulina vittata is distributed across the upper Amazon River basin, with confirmed records from Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. It inhabits still and slow-moving freshwater — shallow pools, floodplain lakes, seasonally inundated forest margins, and the quieter bays of larger rivers — characteristically in areas with dense aquatic and emergent vegetation and soft, often leaf-littered substrates.
Water parameters recorded for its range are typical of lowland Amazonian habitats: temperatures between 23 and 81 °F, pH from 6.0 to 7.5, and generally soft to moderately soft water with low conductivity. The species tends to occupy the upper water column, cruising near the surface where its upturned mouth gives it efficient access to fallen insects and surface-drifting invertebrates.
Feeding
Pyrrhulina vittata is a surface-oriented micropredator in the wild, taking small insects — particularly those that have fallen onto or emerged at the water surface — along with tiny aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and the occasional small crustacean. The upturned mouth is an adaptation for seizing prey at or just below the surface film, and the species tends to hover in the upper few centimetres of water column while hunting.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide variety of small foods: high-quality micro-pellets or crushed flake, freeze-dried or frozen Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, Cyclops, and bloodworm, as well as small live insects such as fruit flies (Drosophila). Offering some surface-drifting live or frozen food encourages natural behaviour. A varied diet that includes live or frozen invertebrates keeps the fish in good condition and brings males into breeding form.
Mating
Pyrrhulina vittata is a substrate spawner with paternal care — a trait that distinguishes the pyrrhulinines from many other characoids. Males establish and defend small territories, typically centred on a broad leaf, a flat stone, or a section of the substrate. Courtship involves the male pursuing and displaying to females, driving rivals away from the spawning site.
Once a receptive female is won over, the pair spawn directly onto the chosen substrate, with the female depositing adhesive eggs that cling to the surface. The male then drives the female away and takes sole charge of the clutch, fanning the eggs and defending the site against intruders. This form of uniparental paternal care is consistent across the genus and is one of the features that makes Pyrrhulina species rewarding to observe in a well-set-up species tank.
Breeding
Breeding Pyrrhulina vittata in captivity is achievable in a small, well-planted aquarium that replicates the calm, vegetated margins of its natural habitat. A conditioning diet of live and frozen small invertebrates brings both sexes into reproductive condition. Broad-leaved plants such as Echinodorus, flat slate pieces, or similar surfaces placed near the substrate give the male a spawning site to clean and defend.
After spawning, the male guards the adhesive egg cluster, fanning it regularly with his pectoral fins. Incubation at 75–79 °F typically takes around 24 to 48 hours. Once the fry become free-swimming, the male's parental involvement wanes and the adults should be removed to prevent predation on the fry. The tiny fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp and micro-worms as they grow. Soft, slightly acidic water and good water quality are important during rearing.
In the aquarium
Pyrrhulina vittata is a good choice for a planted nano or small community aquarium focused on soft-water Amazonian biotope species. Its small size — under 1.5 in — means it can be kept comfortably in tanks from around 10 US gal upward, provided the tank is well planted and covered, as the species is an able jumper. A tightly fitting lid is essential. Dense surface vegetation or floating plants help diffuse light and mimic the shaded margins the fish favours; open swimming lanes near the surface allow the characteristic hovering and darting behaviour to be observed.
Water should be soft, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5) and warm (73–81 °F). Pyrrhulina vittata is peaceful with other small species but may occasionally be nippy toward very long-finned or slow-moving tankmates; it does best alongside other small characins, dwarf cichlids, or similarly sized pencil-fishes. Kept in a group of six or more, the fish display more naturally and males show the paternal spawning behaviour with less stress. Maintenance is straightforward and the species is hardy once acclimatised, making it accessible to aquarists with modest experience.
Conservation
Pyrrhulina vittata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in September 2020. The species has a broad distribution across the upper Amazon basin spanning Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru, and is not considered to face any range-wide threats that would place it in a threatened category at present.
Locally, like all Amazonian lowland species, it is potentially affected by deforestation and floodplain modification that degrades the shallow, vegetated habitats it depends on. No targeted conservation measures are in place for this species, nor are they currently considered necessary given its widespread distribution and Least Concern status. It appears in the international aquarium trade in small numbers, and wild-caught and tank-bred specimens are both available; collection pressure is not considered a significant concern.
