Hyphessobrycon gracilior was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1964. The species belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Hyphessobrycon, one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, which collectively represents the largest family of freshwater fishes in South America. The valid name as currently listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hyphessobrycon gracilior Géry, 1964; the authority is not placed in parentheses because the species was described in Hyphessobrycon and has not been moved to another genus.
The taxonomy of Hyphessobrycon is notoriously difficult. The genus has historically accumulated species on the basis of superficial similarities and has been criticized as potentially polyphyletic; molecular and morphological revisions continue to reshuffle species among related genera. H. gracilior has not been the subject of focused revisionary work, and its precise phylogenetic position within the broader characid radiation remains unresolved. The original 1964 description by Géry provides the founding diagnosis; subsequent literature on this species is sparse.

When kept, a species of this size and habitat preference would require a small, well-planted aquarium with soft, acidic water in the 72–82 °F range, subdued lighting, and a dark substrate to display natural behaviour and colouration. A blackwater setup with leaf litter, driftwood, and peat filtration most closely replicates the tannin-stained conditions of its native streams.
Given its minute size — around 0.5–1 in — H. gracilior should be housed with similarly small, non-aggressive tankmates or kept as a species-only group. Filtration must be gentle to avoid sweeping small fish into the intake; a sponge filter is appropriate. As with other rarely traded Hyphessobrycon, the species is best kept in a group of six or more to reduce stress and promote natural shoaling behaviour. Food should be offered in very small particle sizes. Data on long-term captive care are essentially absent from the published literature.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon gracilior has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its small size, limited collection history, and restricted documentation make it typical of the large number of Amazonian characins that fall below the threshold of formal conservation evaluation — not because they are demonstrably secure, but because the data to assess them are absent.
The upper Amazon basin, while still holding vast tracts of intact forest, faces ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and river modification across its headwater drainages. Small stream-dwelling characins with restricted ranges are among the most vulnerable freshwater fishes to these changes, yet they are also the least monitored.
