Taxonomy & naming
Charax tectifer was described by the American naturalist Edward Drinker Cope in 1870, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Charax tectifer (Cope, 1870), with parenthetical authority indicating the species was moved from its original genus after description. It belongs to the subfamily Characinae of the family Characidae, a grouping sometimes called the dog tetras or glass tetras that contains a number of obligate or facultative scale-eaters alongside general carnivores.
The genus Charax is one of several characid genera that share the robustly toothed jaws, compressed body, and upward-tilted snout characteristic of the scale-eating or predatory Characinae. Systematic placement within Characidae has shifted as molecular phylogenies have refined the boundaries of the family and its subfamilies, but Charax itself is well established. The authority and family assignment follow Catalog of Fishes as the governing reference for valid names.
Morphology
Charax tectifer is a moderately large characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 5.5 in. The body is laterally compressed and silvery, with the translucent flanks and prominent scales typical of the group. The snout is slightly upturned and the mouth angled accordingly — an adaptation seen in other Characinae and associated with the scale-scraping feeding mode, which requires the fish to approach a target obliquely and rake the flank with its teeth.
The dentition is characteristically strong and pointed for the genus. Coloration in life is bright silver, often with a faint lateral iridescence; preserved specimens lose much of this sheen. Like most Characinae, the species lacks the striking chromatic patterns of popular aquarium tetras, its appeal lying in body form and behaviour rather than colour.
Habitat
Charax tectifer is distributed in the upper Amazon River basin, confirmed from freshwater environments at depths of 0–13 ft over sandy or rocky substrates. It is classified as benthopelagic, meaning it moves through both the water column and near-bottom zones rather than being strictly demersal or pelagic.

Charax tectifer is a carnivore, and FishBase notes it is possibly a scale-eater — a feeding strategy documented in several Characinae in which the fish darts at larger fishes and rakes scales from their flanks with its teeth before retreating. Whether this is an obligate behaviour or one practised opportunistically alongside other prey is not firmly established in the literature for this species specifically.
In general, members of Charax and allied genera feed on small fishes, invertebrates, and scales as available. In captivity the species should be offered meaty foods — small feeder fish, larger frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and krill, and sinking carnivore pellets. A tank of at least 47 in in length is appropriate for adult specimens of this size, furnished with open swimming space and some cover in the form of driftwood or robust plants. Water should be maintained at 73–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and hardness to around 20 dH, with good filtration and regular water changes to support a predatory fish. Feeding exclusively on meaty foods means water quality requires careful management. The species is not widely available in the trade and is more likely to be encountered through specialist importers than general fish shops.
