Cheirodon australe was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1928 from type material collected at Rio Pescado, Chile. The type specimen (CASICH 69187), collected on 10 March 1919, is housed in the California Academy of Sciences ichthyology collection. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Cheirodon australe Eigenmann, 1928.
The genus Cheirodon belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses small characins distributed across South America, particularly in southerly latitudes. Among South American tetras, Cheirodon species are notable for extending into cool, sub-Andean and Patagonian drainages — habitats unusual for a family typically associated with warmer tropical waters.
